Last summer, Table Urban Farm took on an unlikely challenge: transforming the weedy, trash-filled plot outside the District 4 Police Station in southwest Denver into a thriving urban garden. Today, that once-neglected land is a living example of what community and creativity can achieve. With nearly 9,000 square feet of land now being gardened, the tended, flourishing space is getting a welcoming gaze from the hundreds who pass by daily—neighbors, students, police officers, and bus riders—all brought together at this unique intersection.
As drivers slow down and shout their thanks or neighbors stop to rest at the picnic table, the garden has become more than a green space—it’s a crossroads for connection, curiosity, and well-being. Every week, community members, from children to mothers and even police officers, can be found resting at a picnic table, seeking safety or quiet. The soft buzzing of bees about the flowers and the hive both attract and calm visitors. We’ve seen children taste their first melons, police officers sample strawberries, and neighbors ask for seeds and advice to start their own gardens. “It feels safer and friendlier here now,” shared one regular bus rider, “and the garden just makes me smile.”
Our mission at Table Urban Farm is to transform overlooked spaces into hubs of health, hope, and belonging. At 2100 S. Clay Street, we’re proving that you don’t need to travel far to find the benefits of nature. This garden is right at the entrance, the exit, on the way, and in the midst of. What can we learn about the health impact of having a garden at such an intersection? Research, as seen in the recent New York Times article on Sweden’s urban gardens, confirms what we observe every day: these tiny oases can have a profound impact on health and community. What do we know about the impacts of proximity? Where should we be transforming overlooked spaces into tiny gardens? Right where we live, right where we move, right where we find ourselves being.
But we’re just getting started.
