Did you know that dogs and cats can actually get jealous when their owners show too much attention to another pet?

Studies have shown that our furry friends can experience emotions similar to jealousy when they feel left out or see another animal getting extra love and praise. Dogs, for example, may try to squeeze between you and the other pet, whine, or nudge your hand to get your attention back. Cats might show their feelings by flicking their tails, meowing more, or even giving you the cold shoulder for a bit!

This behavior isn’t just “acting out”, t’s their way of expressing attachment and protecting their bond with you. To help keep the peace in multi-pet homes, be sure to spend quality one-on-one time with each pet, give them their own space, and reward calm, positive interactions.

After all, a little extra love and balance can go a long way toward keeping every tail wagging and every purr content!

Have you ever wondered why your cat or dog’s eyes seem to glow in the dark?

That’s thanks to a special layer in their eyes called the tapetum lucidum, a reflective surface behind the retina that helps them see better in low light!

It acts like a built-in mirror, bouncing light back through the retina to give their photoreceptor cells a second chance to absorb it. This gives our pets their incredible night vision and that spooky, glowing-eye look in flash photos!

Just one more way our furry friends are perfectly adapted for their world.

Vaccines: A Simple Way to Protect Your Pet

Keeping your pet healthy means more than good food and love, it means protection from preventable diseases. Vaccines are a safe and powerful way to do that.

With our warm climate and active pet community, vaccination is essential. Core vaccines like Rabies, DHPP (for dogs), and FVRCP (for cats) protect against serious and sometimes fatal illnesses still found in our area.

Even indoor pets need vaccines, and regular boosters keep their protection strong. At Woodforest Animal Hospital, we tailor each pet’s vaccine plan to their age, health, and lifestyle; no unnecessary shots, just the right care.

Vaccines are quick, affordable, and can truly save lives.
If your pet is overdue, now’s the perfect time to schedule a visit!

Most Popular Breed – Labs have consistently ranked as one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States (and many other countries) for decades.

Canadian Roots – Despite their name, Labrador Retrievers actually originated in Newfoundland, not Labrador. They were bred to help fishermen retrieve nets and fish.

Water-Loving Dogs – Labs have webbed toes and a thick “otter tail” that makes them excellent swimmers.

Gentle Mouth – They’re famous for their “soft mouth,” meaning they can carry things (like game birds or even eggs) without damaging them.

Great Workers – Labs are commonly used as service dogs, therapy dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, and detection dogs because of their intelligence and eager-to-please nature.

Endless Energy – They’re playful, athletic, and often described as “puppies at heart,” even as adults.

Food Lovers – Labs are well-known for their big appetites, so owners have to be careful about overfeeding.

Record Lifespan – The oldest known Labrador lived to be over 27 years old!

Tail Communication – Their strong, wagging tails are so powerful they’re sometimes nicknamed “happy tails.”

🩺 Medical Monday 🩺

Cats groom themselves daily, and in the process, they swallow loose hair. Most passes through, but sometimes it builds up in the stomach and forms a hairball.

⚠️ An occasional hairball is normal—but if too much hair collects, it can cause a serious blockage in the stomach or intestines. This requires urgent veterinary care.

Prevention Tips:
✨ Brush regularly to reduce shedding
✨ Use hairball-control diets or treats
✨ Encourage water intake
✨ Keep your cat active and playful

Watch for Warning Signs:
🚨 Frequent gagging/coughing with no hairball
🚨 Repeated vomiting
🚨 Loss of appetite
🚨 Constipation or diarrhea
🚨 Lethargy or hiding

Hairballs are common, but blockages are dangerous. With good grooming and care, you can help keep your cat safe and comfortable! 💙
