This sweet barn kitty is recovering so well after her spay procedure performed by Dr. Luton at Woodforest Animal Hospital! Our surgery suits have been helping keep her incision protected while she heals, while also keeping her comfortable during recovery. We think she’s looking pretty adorable in it too. 🩺✨

: Seizures in Dogs & Cats

Seeing your pet have a seizure can be very scary. Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain and may look like shaking, paddling, twitching, drooling, collapsing, or staring off into space.

Possible causes include:
• Epilepsy/genetics
• Toxins or poisons
• Low blood sugar
• Liver disease
• Brain tumors
• Head trauma
• Infections or inflammation

What should you do during a seizure?
• Stay calm
• Move your pet away from anything dangerous
• Do NOT put your hands near their mouth
• Time the seizure if possible
• Keep the room quiet and dim
• Record a video for your veterinarian if you safely can

If a seizure lasts longer than 3–5 minutes or multiple seizures happen close together, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

Diagnosing seizures may involve bloodwork, neurologic exams, blood pressure checks, and sometimes advanced imaging like an MRI.

Many pets with seizures require lifelong medication such as Phenobarbital, Keppra, or Zonisamide. Pets on seizure medication need:
✔️ Routine exams
✔️ Regular bloodwork
✔️ Medication monitoring
✔️ Consistent dosing, never stop medication suddenly unless directed by your veterinarian.

— Scottish Fold Cats

Did you know Scottish Folds are famous for their adorable folded ears caused by a natural genetic mutation? Even crazier, they aren’t actually born with folded ears! Their ears begin to fold around 3–4 weeks old.

These sweet little “owl cats” originated in Scotland in the 1960s from a barn cat named Susie. With their giant round eyes and cuddly personalities, it’s easy to see why they stole everyone’s hearts.

A few more fun facts about Scottish Folds:
- They’re usually very affectionate and LOVE being around their people
- Many communicate with tiny chirps instead of loud meows
- They can be short-haired or long-haired (called Highland Folds!)
- They stay playful well into adulthood and love interactive toys
- They’re known for following their favorite person from room to room

While they’re adorable, responsible breeding is very important because the folded-ear gene can sometimes cause joint and cartilage issues.

: Hernias in Dogs & Cats

A hernia occurs when tissue or an organ pushes through a weak spot in the muscle wall. Some look like soft lumps, while others happen internally and can be more serious.

Common Types:
• Umbilical (belly button): Small bulge near the navel, common in puppies/kittens
• Inguinal (groin): Lump where the leg meets the body
• Perineal (rear): Swelling near the a**s, often in older male dogs
• Diaphragmatic: Organs move into the chest, can affect breathing
• Hiatal: Part of the stomach slips into the chest, causing reflux/regurgitation

Treatment:
• Small cases may just be monitored
• Most require surgery to repair the defect
• Some hiatal hernias can be managed with meds/diet

Can they come back after repair?
Recurrence is uncommon, but possible, especially without proper healing or activity restriction.

Bottom line:
Not all hernias are emergencies, but they should always be checked. Early treatment = better outcomes!

If you notice a lump or unusual symptoms, don’t ignore it, we’re here to help!

Ear Mites in Cats & Dogs

Ear mites are tiny, contagious parasites that live in the ear canal. Cats get them most often, but dogs can too, and they spread easily between pets.

Signs:
• Constant ear scratching
• Head shaking
• Dark “coffee-ground” debris
• Red, irritated ears
• Bad odor

How they spread:
Ear mites spread through direct contact with an infected animal or shared bedding, toys, or environments. If one pet has them, it’s very likely others in the household do too!

Good news:
Ear mites are very treatable with vet-prescribed medication, and all pets in the home may need treatment.

Note:
Not all ear problems are mites, an exam is needed for proper diagnosis.

Call us if you suspect ear mites, we’re here to help keep your pets comfortable!
