Animal Aid Society

Animal Aid Society A happy place for dogs in transition between homes. Volunteer run since 1971. Animal Aid Society is an all-volunteer organization!

On average, the AAS volunteer force contributes 900 hours of every month, which translates to just under $275,000 annually in donated labor. Everyone from the daily dog walkers, the marketing team to the board members donates their time to create a safe haven for homeless dogs. That means that AAS is able to invest 100% of all donations and fundraising monies to provide for the dogs in their care.

To encourage this passion in future generations, AAS partners with community groups (scouts and athletic teams) to create volunteer and educational opportunities for local teens and young adults. Families with children are encouraged to come and walk dogs in their park-like facility as a bonding experience and volunteering opportunity all rolled into one. The rescue strongly believes that the connection and interaction of volunteers with the animals results in a higher level of healing for both the volunteers and the animals. From walking and socialization to fundraisers and adoption events, volunteers are integral to the day-to-day operation of the rescue. Timmy!
Some dogs arrive looking like they were built from a blueprint. Others, like Timmy, show up looking like someone raided the "spare parts" bin and said, “Let’s get weird - with love.”
He’s got a head that defies geometry, pointy in a way that begs for nose boops and forehead smooches.
His body? All stout muscle and stocky swagger, like a football player in a prom tux. And he is dressed to impress - his tuxedo coat is sharp enough to get him past any velvet rope, and his deep brown eyes? Soft enough to charm even the strictest of bouncers into granting him a lifetime pass.
Timmy is a healthy, 43-pound, four-year-old and, if we had to guess, assembled entirely from the very best parts:
***A gentle sweetness that seems to come from somewhere deep in his soul.
***A sincere, affectionate nature that leans in close and stays awhile.
***A delightfully goofy playfulness that peeks out when he’s feeling joyful.
***Leash manners so polite he makes sidewalk strolls feel like ballroom dancing
He came to us from an overcrowded rural shelter, but it’s clear Timmy once had a home - he knows his cues, keeps his space tidy, and carries himself like a dog who remembers what it feels like to belong.
He’s ready to feel that way again.
Come meet Timmy at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton. We’re open for visits every day from 9am to noon—including weekends and holidays.

Every day we go to see Lily and every day we know where to find her - she is curled up in her room, in the corner, underneath her bed. We think we lost her and then smile as we remember, nope, she is right where she normally is - under her bed.

She is coming out of her shell more and more each day and she is an absolute delight. Lily is one of the lucky ones that has story-time with our British lady and she is currently enthralled with Jemima Puddleduck.

Lily is a three-year-old beagle-dachshund mix who was found as a stray by a neighboring shelter and she is perfect in every way. Be it her beautiful eyes, perfect little nose or her cute, elongated body, she charms you as soon as you meet her.

When you hold Lily, she has a way burrowing into you - so much so that you never want to put her down! You think you are comforting her, but really, she is making you feel better!

If it is love, comfort, friendship or joy that you are looking for, Lily is all that and more. Come meet this beautiful, soulful girl any day from 9am-12pm - she will be waiting for you, underneath her bed.

There’s nothing sadder than a Burtless Ernie.
And yet, here he is... Solo, sweet, smart, snuggly, and slightly confused.
Ernie is a 5-year-old, healthy Beagle with the charm and sincerity of a grass-stained kid who picked a dandelion bouquet just for you.
He’s got that classic Beagle nose, deep brown eyes that only see the best in you, and a heart that just wants to belong.
Ernie was adopted recently and then brought back through no fault of his own.
In the home? Flawless. Not destructive. Great with little kids. Great with other dogs. A professional cuddler and a playful goofball.
But on leash? 30-pounds of pull, possibly because no one ever taught him what a leash was.
It’s not that Ernie doesn’t want to be good - he just doesn’t know what’s being asked of him. (Honestly, same, Ernie.)
That’s fixable... with time, patience, and maybe some cheese.
All dogs have quirks -- from a breeder, from a shelter, from a friend - it doesn't matter.
Dogs are basically toddlers, but stronger and fuzzier.
They all need guidance and training -- but that's how the relationship forms!
You work together, you learn about each other, you celebrate victories - and you form an unbreakable bond.
So if you have a fenced yard for exercise and supervised adventures, or you're willing to teach an otherwise-perfect dog that the leash isn’t a confusing cosmic betrayal, please come meet Ernie.
He would love nothing more than to snuggle up with you and gaze adoringly into your eyes at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton.
Visiting hours are 9am to noon, every day, including weekends and holidays.

Four more adoptions in the books! We must have the very best pups around (spoiler alert: we do!).
Shamrock is headed to a wonderful home with loving adopters and a fantastic canine sibling who will help her come out of her shell. Clarence has been in medical foster throughout his heart worm treatment and is now officially adopted! Taco now claims his forever home and forever lap! And Ruby, well, she is a special case. With her medical condition, she's not expected to have the life span of most dogs her size. Her adopters (and sibling canines) have embraced her and will help her live the very best life!

We are tremendously thankful for the local community who continues to show up, adopt, volunteer and donate to keep Animal Aid Society moving ever forward in our mission to be a safe haven for homeless dogs.

Found on the side of the road, in the sweltering heat. Picked up by a Good Samaritan, she made her way to us.

Her legs were stained yellow from urine. When we gave her a bath, the smell of urine and cigarette smoke permeated the air. And that was just the beginning.

We took her to the vet right away - but we had to leave her there for a time because they had to shave her before they could even examine her. Two and a half hours later, she was shaved. It wasn't easy but you could almost see the relief on her face.

All in all, this ten-year-old girl is fairly healthy. Just ear infections and UTI, but, otherwise, in good health. Someone fed her, that much is clear, despite her lack of teeth. Her eyesight is limited in one but better in the other and her lungs are slightly compromised from the cigarette smoke.

We gave her a sweet name because she stole our hearts from the moment we saw her - even though we could barely see her under all of the hair.

And every day since then she has brought joy to all who love her. She's just happy. Despite obviously wallowing in her urine in a smokey environment, she seems to realize we all want to help her and make her life better. And, in return, she has offered us her unconditional love.

Pudding has an adorable crook in her tail - which shows us all that her road in life is just bent but not broken. If you want to be the one to lead her to the most wonderful part of her life, please come meet this angel - a decision you will never regret.

Come meet Pudding and all of her friends at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. Open daily between 9am and noon.

Not always, but with Norman & Daisy?
Two is easier than one.
These healthy 15- & 11-year old Scottish Terrier mixes are a matched set: they don’t just go well together - they belong together.
So yes, they must be adopted as a pair. But don’t let that scare you. In this case, two dogs means half the worry and double the fun!
Here’s why: Norman and Daisy are each deeply devoted to people, but they’re also perfectly happy keeping each other company when you’re busy, away, or just trying to shower in peace.
No guilt, no destruction, no sad eyes peeking under the bathroom door. Just two best friends snoozing side-by-side, waiting patiently for your return.
Go to work? They’ve got each other.
Run errands? They’ll hold down the fort.
Taking a break from being the “fun mom”? They’ll entertain themselves.
They keep each other company when you’re gone, and save all their wiggles, happy grunts, and gentle but persistent attempts to scale your leg (anything to get closer to your face) for when you return.
They are the only two dogs at Animal Aid Society who share a kennel, and I was fully braced for chaos the first morning I came in. I mean, two dogs, one space? I expected chaos. Wet, smelly chaos. Instead, I found… nothing. No accidents. Toys in place. Beds somehow neater than I remembered. I’m not saying they cleaned up after themselves, but I’m also not NOT saying that.
Norman and Daisy are:
- Spectacularly housetrained
- Gentle and graceful on leash
- Car ride enthusiasts with good taste in music
- Social, sweet, and silly with everyone they meet
- Healthy, happy, and heartbreakingly good
Their story? They were someone’s pets. Loved, clearly. But then that someone left them with a friend, moved away, and never came back. Norman and Daisy never lost their trust in people. They just leaned on each other a little more.
Now they’re ready to lean on you - together.
Come meet them at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton. We’re open every day from 9am to noon, including weekends and holidays.
Because Norman & Daisy are senior and small (about 19 pounds), they'd prefer a home with no young children.

Every once in awhile, we get a dog into our Shelter who is picture perfect and instantly ready to go home. No medical issues, no behavioral issues, just no issues at all. And Rocky is that dog.

To be fair, he does not like the sound of a vacuum or power tools, but other than that, all good. Well, he is also a smidge shy when he meets you - and it will last for about 5 seconds, and then all good.

Rocky is a 10-month-old mini Australian Shepherd (neutered, UTD and microchipped). He was an owner surrender - the circumstances in the home changed and Rocky was alone too many hours during the day. He has adjusted quickly to life at the Shelter - many puppies do, which is sad but true.

We wanted to get Rocky into playgroups ASAP because that helps immensely with stress for the dogs. And Rocky was the cutest thing - he was immediately attracted to the somewhat-shy Chrissy - neither of them cared about the three other dogs in the Garden with them - they only had eyes for each other.

And let's state the obvious about Rocky - he is devastatingly handsome. Just gorgeous. And, at a mere 20 pounds, he is about the size he will be for life - the perfect size.

The best place for a puppy to be in regards to a shelter is OUT of the shelter. So please come meet this treasure of a dog - he is most definitely ready to go and we can't wait for him to start the rest of his life!

Rocky and all of his AAS friends are available to visitors any day of the year between 9am and noon! Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton.

Shakespeare got it wrong... Let's write our Romeo a tragedy story that ends in love!
Our Romeo doesn’t need a fancy balcony or iambic pentameter - just a quiet home, a steady hand, and someone who knows that real love takes time.
Here’s the tragic beginning:
Romeo came to us from an overcrowded rural shelter, hand-shy and unsure, but SO eager to belong. He flinches at fast movements but leans in, tentatively and hopefully, when he thinks you're kind. He adores soft squeaky toys -- he carefully contemplates each one... then pounces with delight!
He’s had a rough start: lost, alone, and heartworm-positive. Being so young, the heartworm affected his growth - he’s just under 40 pounds and likely won’t get much bigger. He’s already started treatment, and Animal Aid Society will cover the entire cost, even after adoption.
Romeo was adopted once (for just two days), but the constant noise and hallway commotion of apartment life overwhelmed him. Romeo doesn’t want a crowded stage; he wants a calm space in the wings where he can learn to feel safe and seen.
Loving a shy dog is a slow-burning masterpiece. It’s the first tail wag, the first gentle nudge, the first time he falls asleep with his head in your lap. It’s a story of triumph measured in tiny moments, or, in the words of Shakespeare: “Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast.”
Romeo’s love isn’t reckless or theatrical. He doesn't need a Juliet who panics when things seem uncertain - he needs someone who pauses, reassesses, and realizes... This isn’t the end, it’s just intermission. Less poison and daggers, more patience and devotion.
THAT'S the next scene - the love story we need YOU to write.
Wherefore art thou Romeo?
He's at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton. Showtimes daily (including weekends and holidays) from 9am to noon.

No need to adjust your screens - these two boys are as handsome as they appear. And charming, cuddly and adorable - plus 100 other amazing adjectives.

Luke (6-years-old, golden retriever) and Harley (11-years-old, golden lab) came to us together as owner surrenders. In an absolute perfect world, they would be adopted out together. In a realistic world, we want them each out of the shelter and into a home with a family.

Luke enjoys cuddling up to the closest person. He looks at you with his great big eyes, attached to his big puppy-dog head, and you instantly melt. Harley makes 11-years-old seem like the new five-years-old - he is spry, agile and full of life.

Luke and Harley are big, cream-colored puffs of love. They are only looking for the best and last chapter in their lives - they are willing to give you their hearts and unconditional love. Perhaps you can return the favor?

Come meet these fabulous boys any day between 9am-12pm - they will be the ones making a lasting impression on any one within two feet of them!
