Animal Aid Society

Animal Aid Society A happy place for dogs in transition between homes. Volunteer run since 1971. Animal Aid Society is an all-volunteer organization!

On average, the AAS volunteer force contributes 900 hours of every month, which translates to just under $275,000 annually in donated labor. Everyone from the daily dog walkers, the marketing team to the board members donates their time to create a safe haven for homeless dogs. That means that AAS is able to invest 100% of all donations and fundraising monies to provide for the dogs in their care.

To encourage this passion in future generations, AAS partners with community groups (scouts and athletic teams) to create volunteer and educational opportunities for local teens and young adults. Families with children are encouraged to come and walk dogs in their park-like facility as a bonding experience and volunteering opportunity all rolled into one. The rescue strongly believes that the connection and interaction of volunteers with the animals results in a higher level of healing for both the volunteers and the animals. From walking and socialization to fundraisers and adoption events, volunteers are integral to the day-to-day operation of the rescue. Sometimes, the best dogs rise up out of the worst situations. They thrive in spite of their conditions.

Such is the case with the ever-happy Cooper. Tall and handsome, this 3-year-old boy was seized from his previous owner. A previous AAS dog was also seized from this same person - and, finally, charges are being brought against him.

The previous dog that was seized is thriving in his new home. He is cautious and trusts slowly. Cooper, on the other hand, lives life out loud. We are certain of two things with Cooper - he has never met a stranger and he has never had a bad day.

Cooper can be given the worst circumstances but make the best outcome from them. Cooper has never met a toy he doesn't like, never woken up grumpy and has loved every meal offered to him.

Size-wise, Cooper is somewhere between a Chihuahua and a St. Bernard, but much closer to the St. Bernard. He is 70 pounds but moves as easily as a deer.

Please come meet this amazing boy - he was given lemons, so let's help him make his lemonade. Because, really, who wouldn't want a little Cooper in their life?

Frank is a real-life optical illusion. He’s only 38 pounds, but somehow he takes up a whole room - and your whole heart.
A squat, compact little dude with a sturdy body and short legs, he’s the pocket-sized version of a gentle giant.
Frank is the kind of dog who knows what you need before you do. Silly when you’re low and need a boost, gentle when you need calm, and perfectly cuddly when you need a hug.
He walks beautifully on-leash, seems to be housetrained, and at just 2 years old, he’s already mastered the art of being everyone’s favorite.
Don’t take our word for it - ask his fan club. On a recent vet visit, he charmed every single person there, from the waiting room to the medical staff.
Frank doesn’t just make friends; he makes believers.
Yes, he’s heartworm positive. No, it doesn’t slow him down (his short legs do that for him).
He’s otherwise healthy, and Animal Aid Society will cover the full cost of his treatment, even after you bring him home.
Frank is living proof that sometimes the best things really do come in small, sturdy packages.
Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. We’re open to visitors from 9am to noon, including weekends and holidays.

Much like the classic gentleman Bogart is named for, our guy also believes in love. Our Bogart has an overwhelming love for people. He tolerates other dogs but adores people.

Imagine having a rough day and walking up to see Bogart - and then imagine him seeing you and giving you the biggest dog hug ever. Your day is instantly changed - all because of an adorable black and white dog.

Rare is the dog who prefers your pets instead of a treat - but that's Bogart. Connection. That's all he is seeking. Connection with people. Because he has so much love to give.

Bogart is a stray that was brought to us by another shelter. He is just two-years-old and weighs 30lbs - he is a bit underweight but is well on his way to a healthier life.

Bogart has only been with us for a week but we are pretty sure he has hugged every single one of us. He has the sweetest soul and the kindest disposition.

If you want the perfect beginning and end to your days, look no further than Bogart. Love has no limits with Bogart - let him show you what we mean.

Bogart and his friends are available to meet every single day from 9am-12pm!

Night after night, a woman lay in bed listening to the sound of heartbreak - Strudel’s cries drifting over the fence.
He was alone in a yard, unfed, unattended, and very quickly wasting away. Finally, she couldn’t stand it anymore. She scraped together every dollar she had, went to her neighbor, and bought Strudel on the spot.
She didn’t have a plan - she’s active duty military, gone long hours, and not even allowed to have a dog where she lives. But she couldn’t listen to his cries a minute more.
And that’s how Strudel landed with us.
At just a year old, he weighs 38 pounds when he should weigh 55. He’ll probably always be smaller than the average German Shepherd, but don’t tell him that. Strudel thinks he’s full-sized in every way that matters.
Like his namesake pastry, Strudel is warm and sweet - he’ll melt right into your arms. He’s also just the right amount of flaky, with a goofiness that will keep you laughing. And this particular pastry seems to have gulped down the traditional side coffee, because Strudel comes fully caffeinated - ready to play, bounce, and zoom his way into your life. He especially loves car rides and making new friends (and potentially making new friends from the car window, so please keep him belted in!).
He’s had a rough start, but Strudel’s future doesn’t have to look anything like his past. What he needs now is a home where he’ll be fed, loved, and never left crying in the dark again.

Well, word must have gotten out on the streets of dog land. If you are shy, feeling alone and need some comfort, head to Animal Aid.

Someone must have told all the homeless dogs about a very kind British lady who will bring her own stool into your run and read to you. You will follow the adventures of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck, and life will be a little calmer and easier for you. You can even fall asleep for a minute and she will still be with you when you wake up.

And, the best part? She brings you some kind of British luck. After you spend some time with her, you find some confidence. It was always there, but life on the street had hidden it away. You are braver, stronger and ready for your next, best chapter.

And then - your perfect family comes along and the magic happens. They pick you! It is finally your turn to go home and, because of a sweet British lady, you are ready for all of it.

So here is our amazing Susie. She came to us as a shy, lovable girl. She wanted to be brave but wasn't quite there yet. And then it happened - the British lady picked her! They have spent many an afternoon together seeing what Peter Rabbit gets into next.

Susie has come alive and welcomes people much easier into her world. She is curious and wants to explore everything around her. And she loves the touch of people.

Susie is ready for the perfect ending! She is ready for you to come meet her and finish her story. And, spoiler alert, she will love you even if you don't have a British accent. Come see for yourself!

Timmy was so close.
So close to the dream, so close to joy. A kind, happy family met him and fell in love. They were ready to bring him home.
And Timmy - sweet, gentle Timmy - knew something good was coming. He held his head higher. He wagged a little harder.
Then came the setback we never saw coming.
Before adoption, Timmy went in for a dental procedure. That’s when the vet discovered something heartbreaking: based on the pattern of damage, the vet believes someone once struck Timmy so hard in the mouth that nine of his teeth had to be removed. Nine. Imagine the pain, the fear, the betrayal Timmy endured - and yet he still leans into people for affection, still walks with grace, still believes the world might be kind.
Here’s what this means for Timmy now: he sometimes gets anxious if someone grabs him by the face or holds his head still. That’s an easy mistake for a young child (or their friends) to make. For Timmy’s comfort and safety, he can only go to a home with older kids (12+) who understand a dog’s boundaries. Snuggles from the side or back? Infinite. But no face-grabbing hugs, at least not yet.
And oh, is Timmy worth it. He’s such a pleasure on-leash that he might be the most well-exercised dog at the shelter. Everyone wants Timmy time! He’s housetrained, healthy, affectionate, never destructive, and one of the snuggliest companions you’ll ever meet. His coat is soft without being floaty or sheddy, and his eyes - those eyes - are the kindest you’ll ever see.
He deserves a family (or person) who fits him just right.
Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. We’re open for visits from 9am to noon every day, weekends and holidays included. Come meet Timmy. He’s ready to believe again.

Please help us welcome these two pint-sized, amazing hounds - Xena and Jamie! These two girls were found as strays and brought to us by another shelter - and we can't wait to find them perfect new homes!

Xena and Jamie are both three-years-old and have the type of shyness about them that makes you wonder about their beginnings. It's like they aren't sure who they can trust so they take their time approving each new friend. But, once approved, whew, get ready for fun!

They are so very curious and love to explore. They have one friend they love to run with - it's our special Muffin, who was just as shy as they are, but has found her comfort zone. Muffin is showing them the ropes and showing them that people can be wonderful friends as well.

Xena is heartworm positive and has begun her treatment - which is fully covered by AAS. They helped each other be brave at the vet and won a few hearts! By the end of the appointment, they both appreciated the comfort of a sofa!

We know Xena and Jamie will take a bit to warm up to visitors - we just hope their visitors will appreciate their eventual charm, joy and silliness and give them the time they need! In the end, it's always worth it!

THOSE EYES!!!
Right now, they’re soft with love and bright with hope. But not long ago, those same eyes must have been wide with terror - because Mazie was abandoned in the woods.
Two incredible Good Samaritans found her there in rough shape. They went above and beyond, paying for her vet care and spay out of pocket, then welcoming her into their home so she could heal. Not all saints wear halos; some carry leashes and dog treats.
Mazie was a dream houseguest: well-mannered, affectionate, and fabulous with people of all ages, including kids. And when it comes to other dogs? Let’s just say she’s fluent in every dialect. In her foster home, she snuggled with a 4-pound Chihuahua, and on particularly cool nights, under a 100-pound Mastiff. Both counted her as a best friend.
At 5 years old and a perfect 25 pounds, she’s the definition of “just right.” She loves sniffing her way through the outdoors, but her favorite activity is curling up on the couch, pressed right against you, reminding you that the best things in life are quiet and warm.
Mazie’s survived her darkest chapter. All that’s left is for someone to write the happy ending - the one where those eyes look up at you and say, “Home at last.”
Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. You can meet Mazie any day from 9am to noon, weekends and holidays included.

Her world is dark. She cannot see. And yet she lights up our world brighter than a star.

Meet Firefly. The most resilient, 11-year-old Chihuahua you could ever hope to meet. She has likely been blind for awhile, according to our vet, because she navigates life very well.

When she hears your voice, her nearly hairless tail starts wagging up a storm. Her legs are hairless as well, but good nutrition is already correcting that for her. And boy does she have an appetite.

She is currently being evaluated medically to see how she will handle sedation. First up is a dental, followed by dealing with her eyes and then anything else she may need.

Firefly was found walking down the middle of a road. She was taken in by a Good Samaritan and was found to have a microchip. It was discovered that her owner died two years ago and the owner's husband gave Firefly to someone else. How she came to be walking down the road in horrible shape, we will never quite understand.

We do know that Firefly was loved and well cared for the first 9 years of her life, And now we need to make her last years just as good.

Firefly loves a good bed, a gentle touch, a good meal and the feel of grass under her paws. She is gaining confidence each day. We are all drawn to her light and love and we know you will be as well.

Come meet this amazing girl any day from 9am-12pm - your heart will melt when you see her little turned up nose getting to know you!

When Hazel went to the local vet, one of the technicians fell in love with her instantly. Hazel's diagnosis revealed serious health issues and the vet tech decided she had to take her home. Hazel will be pampered for the rest of her days, showered with all the good things in life.
