Animal Aid Society

Animal Aid Society A happy place for dogs in transition between homes. Volunteer run since 1971. Animal Aid Society is an all-volunteer organization!

On average, the AAS volunteer force contributes 900 hours of every month, which translates to just under $275,000 annually in donated labor. Everyone from the daily dog walkers, the marketing team to the board members donates their time to create a safe haven for homeless dogs. That means that AAS is able to invest 100% of all donations and fundraising monies to provide for the dogs in their care.

To encourage this passion in future generations, AAS partners with community groups (scouts and athletic teams) to create volunteer and educational opportunities for local teens and young adults. Families with children are encouraged to come and walk dogs in their park-like facility as a bonding experience and volunteering opportunity all rolled into one. The rescue strongly believes that the connection and interaction of volunteers with the animals results in a higher level of healing for both the volunteers and the animals. From walking and socialization to fundraisers and adoption events, volunteers are integral to the day-to-day operation of the rescue. So we have been keeping a secret. A very large secret. Big secrets are hard to keep, but it had to be done.

And her name is Jess. She is the 98lb secret we have been keeping from you. But only for the best reasons.

Jess is a two-year-old owner surrender that came to us very leery and very scared. A young, timid Cane Corso/Mastiff mix, Jess took a bit to settle in with us. There were so many new sounds, lots of dogs and unfamiliar faces.

One by one, Jess accepted new people into her life. She relaxed more and more each day and even made it to the vet, for a very successful visit.

Jess is a very gentle girl - big but dainty. Her previous owner said she was good with older kids and dogs. She barks when she is afraid but as soon as she knows you are her friend, it all stops.

We wanted to give Jess time to get comfortable with the Shelter and time to get to know us - she is our biggest dog at the moment and we didn't want to rush her. But, she is ready! Jess can't wait to meet you all. She will do her best to put her best gigantic foot forward.

This was a very special secret we had to keep from you but now the word is out - Jess is ready to charm you all! Come meet Jess every single day from 9am-12om - see the magic in this sweet, beautiful girl!

Some friendships are forged on playgrounds, others in cubicles or coffee shops.
But Shamrock and Lucky?
Their friendship bloomed in the quiet corners of a rural vet’s office, where two abandoned dogs found comfort in each other while they waited for someone -- anyone -- to remember they mattered.
Shamrock is a 4-year-old hound with a heart like a lullaby. She’s soft, subtle, sweet -- and she carries the wisdom of a mama who’s raised a crowd.
She’s clearly had litters of her own, and when Lucky came along -- scared, unsure -- Shamrock took him under her velvet ear and made him feel safe.
Her big brown eyes don’t just look at you... they settle on you gently, like a blessing, and somehow make you feel a little more whole than you did a moment ago.
Lucky, a 3-year-old Pointer mix, did some rescuing of his own.
He brought Shamrock out of her shell, gently nudging her toward the humans who wanted so badly to help.
He taught her about the joy of squeaky toys, the bliss of zooming in the sun, and the art of leaning in -- literally and figuratively -- for a good snuggle.
They’re not a bonded pair, not in the formal sense. They’ll miss each other, sure, but they’ll each thrive in a home of their own, maybe with other dogs to love and guide.
Still, if you’ve got room in your home and heart for two friends who’ve already done the hard work of loving each other?
They wouldn’t mind staying co-stars in the next chapter.
Come meet Shamrock and Lucky at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road in Hampton. We’re open every day, including weekends and holidays, from 9am to noon.

Congratulations to Shadow and Piper and their new families! These adopters came out in near triple-digit temperatures to find their new source of unconditional love.
Piper, the senior dog who still acts like a happy puppy, is currently being spoiled with all the love, toys and snuggles he can get! Shadow, who can be a little shy, is being treated with kindness and patience while learning how it feels to be loved.

We will miss them, but we could not be any happier for them!

And, finally, some good news. In the last couple of months, we have grown more concerned with Parker's health.

Parker had started losing weight - he is very tall and lanky and he didn't have an ounce to spare. At our Shelter, 99.9% of the dogs that come to us gain weight - we are pros at it - and, yet, Parker was losing weight.

So, after bloodwork, xrays and ultrasounds, it appears that it is not cancer, which was a concern. They haven't exactly pinpointed what it is, but we can close that chapter, at least. More testing is being done.

The best news is that Parker is now gaining weight! He is in a calmer run, in a quieter section and the weight is coming back. And we are thrilled!

Parker is so lovable and goofy and kind. He looks forward to his marvelous British friend who comes weekly to read to him - The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck is a favorite for him! And he never refuses a meal.

Join us in finding a wonderful family for Parker and in celebrating every single pound!

Any dog in a shelter hits hard. But, a senior dog in a shelter hits just a little bit harder.

You wonder about their previous life - were they happy, well-fed and comfortable? Did they know love every day of their life? Did they play with toys? Did they have great human and animal friends?

For Leia, we can answer YES to all of the above. We know she had these things. But then life dealt her Dad a blow and here she is with us. Leia is 12-years-old and she is a beauty. She is calm and loving and enjoys being right next to you. Sadly, she is now also missing her sister, Milly, who had some special medical needs and is in a new home. She won't go into her air-conditioned room at night (or during the day - only to eat) - it's like she doesn't want to miss a sighting of her best friend.

For Creek, we can only answer UNKNOWN to all of the above. We can make a guess that he is a failed hunting dog. He had wounds on his back legs indicating he was possibly caught up in a fence - the wounds are now healing. His teeth are terrible and he has a dental in his near-future. But he has a sweet shyness that touches your heart, while at the same time breaking your heart. Creek is ten-years-old and we wonder if he ever knew love in his previous life - forget did he play with toys or have friends - what about love, did he ever get to experience that?

What we know with absolute certainty about both of these treasures is that when their new family finds them, the amount of appreciation Leia and Creek have for them will be endless. The amount of love they show their family will be unconditional and limitless. They will be able to rest easy in their new homes and when their head hits their pillow, they will be able to relax without worry.

Please help Leia and Creek reach their ultimate goals - their final families. It's a feeling you can't put a price on - the enrichment it will add to your own life.

Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. Open daily between 9AM and noon.

Two Airmen arrived at Animal Aid and hefted an extra-large crate from the back of their truck. They had found a dog. A very NOT happy dog.
They placed the crate on the ground, cautiously opened the door, stepped back... and out came Cami: 13 pounds of righteous fury, decanted like a potion brewed from equal parts grit, glitter, and righteous rage.
Cami was found, no joke, tossed out with the trash in 100+ degree heat, her thick Lhasa Apso coat tangled and caked in what we’re choosing to believe was just mud. (We are very much choosing to believe that.)
No creature can be so dirty and shaggy in these temps, so Cami was whisked away for an emergency medical groom. It wasn’t so much "haircut" as "royal reveal" -- less spa day, more enchanted makeover. What emerged wasn’t just a dog who looked different, but one who felt transformed. It was as if the grime and matting had been holding her spirit captive, and now, finally freed, she was ready for the throne (or at least a really nice dog bed). Still sassy, but now glowing with sweetness and grace.
And, free from the weight of all that matted fur, Cami has discovered a deep, possibly spiritual, passion for tormenting soft squeaky toys.
She pounces, she bounces, she flings them skyward with gleeful abandon -- then chases them down like a very determined, very fluffy predator.
Cami is young (between 1 and 2 years old), but she already knows her worth. She’s not a purse dog. Not a couch accessory. And absolutely not here to match your throw pillows.
She’s whip-smart, full of curiosity, and needs a home that will let her do things -- run, explore, investigate, conquer.
Action? Yes. Adventure? You bet. Playtime? Mandatory.
She’s a modern Disney Princess, more “Mulan charging into battle” than “Sleeping Beauty waiting for a dude.”
But after the battle's won and the dragon’s slayed? Cami’ll jump up in your lap like the softest little victory prize.
She’s 13 pounds of pride, resilience, and glorious attitude. A little spicy, a lot sweet, and very clear on what she wants: a home that understands royalty when it sees it.
Come meet Cami at Animal Aid Society, located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. Visiting hours are daily, including weekends and holidays, from 9am to noon.

Everyone in the world loves Ducky - well, everyone except for the person who shot him. Even with a bullet still lodged in his body, Ducky has never met a stranger and has the biggest smile, hug and tail wag for everyone he meets.

When we saw that Ducky was one of the longest residents at Sussex, we were excited to have the chance to take the baton and help find Ducky an amazing family and home. After meeting him, we realized it would be one of our easiest tasks yet!

Ducky was just 36 pounds when he arrived at Sussex - with their love and medical support, he gained weight and went through heartworm treatment. He is now a very healthy 65 pounds (pure love) and he exudes joy with every movement he makes.

When you meet Ducky, he will remind you of that person in your life who is always glass-half-full. Let's show Ducky that even though one person in this world treated him horribly, the rest of us are all in on loving him.

Draco has resting sad face.
Not because he’s sad -- he’s actually a pretty happy guy -- but his default expression falls somewhere between "we’re out of coffee" and "I just watched the end of Old Yeller."
Or maybe it’s something else.
Maybe it's that Draco feels things FOR you.
That’s what makes him special. He notices. He absorbs. He carries the weight you didn’t even realize was showing.
But don’t be fooled by the mopey mug. This guy gives phenomenal hugs -- the kind that wrap around you like a weighted blanket with a heartbeat. They're steady, grounding, and somehow exactly what you needed.
He’s also remarkably gentle, especially with kids... especially with kids who need a little extra gentleness.
Draco lived with two special needs children who adored him, and the feeling was mutual. He was their companion, their constant, their 65-pound everything.
But life changed.
When both children were diagnosed with serious medical conditions, Draco’s world shifted overnight. Their mom, who had rescued Draco as a sick, emaciated puppy and nursed him back to health, suddenly found herself racing from doctor to doctor. Her days were packed with appointments and her nights were filled with treatments.
She had to make an impossible choice -- the kind that put her love FOR Draco ahead of her love of HAVING Draco -- and she brought her best friend to us.
Draco is one-year old, healthy, housetrained, and neutered. He walks like a gentleman on a leash and brings his calm into every room like a cool breeze.
He would thrive in a loving home, whether it's busy or quiet, big or small. He loves to play, adores other dogs, and brings quiet joy to the swirl of everyday life.
Draco has already been someone’s everything. Now, he’s waiting to be yours.
Come meet him at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. We’re open daily from 9am to noon, including weekends and holidays.

We have written about Jasper so many times - to no avail. We can count on one hand the number of people who have come to see him - in the 170 DAYS he has been with us.

And now he is in a run closest to all the action - so he sees most of the other dogs having the chance to meet new people and meet other dogs - all potential new families. And he rarely has the chance for that - even though he has been here almost the longest.

What's missing that may entice someone to come meet one of the best dogs that we have at the Shelter? Maybe that he is the perfect age and size - at almost three-years-old and 45 pounds. Or that he is a champ at playgroup - always trying to fit in and make the other dogs feel comfortable.

Or maybe how he finds an amazing amount of joy when new toys are tossed to him in his run - like it is Christmas, for 170 days in a row.

Maybe knowing that he paces around his run all during the day - probably trying to figure out if this will be his whole life - will make someone think twice and realize what a treasure Jasper is.

Jasper is worth your time, he is worth taking a chance on - he will make some family the luckiest family ever. He has complete joy and love to give - he just needs the chance.

Isn't 170 days long enough? Please SHARE Jasper's story - we need him to know that his new life is right around the corner!

Jasper is available to meet every single day from 9am-12pm at 80 Butler Farm Road!

It's adoption Tuesday and WOW, did our adopters step up this week! Happy dogs, happy humans, forever homes! We are so thankful these folks came by and met their newest family members - Twiggy, Cletus, Milly and Bentley!

If you look carefully in Milly's photo, you will recognize two former AAS pups - Betty White and Naomi! Milly will be going home with them and two other rescues to share the love, attention (and sofa) of their huge-hearted adopters.

Congratulations!!
