📌 TRAINING TIP TUESDAY – Why We Don’t Use “Stay”

At Building Better Dogs, we believe in keeping training clear, simple, and effective — for both the dog and the human. One of the biggest myths in basic obedience is the idea that you must teach a separate "stay" command. But here’s the truth:

🐾 When we ask a dog to "Sit" or "Down," the command itself already means “stay in that position” until they’re told otherwise.
There’s no need to layer on an extra word like "stay" — it just adds unnecessary confusion.

✅ Instead, we focus on what’s called implied duration.
That means once your dog performs a behavior (like sit), they remain in that position until you:

👉 Give a new command (like “Down” or "Come"), or
👉 Use a termination marker (we use the word “Free”) to release them from the position.

This system builds clear communication, focus, and accountability — without the extra noise.

💡 Pro Tip: Mark the effort with a “Yes” while they hold the behavior to keep them motivated and engaged!
