Babies + Dogs 🐕 🍼
Are you a human and dog parent?
Are you expecting your first human child?
Will your dog be around children even if not living with them?
Last weekend I traveled to Florida to celebrate my cousin as she’s expecting her first child in July. Her lovely dog, Poppy, is a well-mannered but also energetic and curious adolescent pup.
Another cousin of ours has a 9-month old beautiful daughter and so we had a lovely opportunity for a beautiful teaching moment about dog & baby safety.
As a gift to my cousin and her family, I’m registering them for a self-paced online course through but with lots of family present, I was able to demonstrate one of the most important concepts to help keep both baby and dog safe.
And that is….
If baby is on the scene, there’s a parent in between!
You can see Poppy laying on one side of my cousin’s leg and her baby on her lap.
Poppy was able to relax and spend quality time with everyone, baby included, and my cousin was able to monitor her daughter’s interactions with Poppy appropriately — teaching her how to safely interact and NOT simply allow her to pull on Poppy’s ears or slap her out of excitement which would only set everyone up for failure.
Dogs are sentient beings who deserve autonomy over their bodies. It’s not their job to tolerate ear or tail pulling from babies or little baby hands in their faces, smacking their backs, or riding them.
As adults, it’s our responsibility to both dogs and babies to facilitate healthy and mutually respectful relationships between them.
Remember, dogs are just toddlers with teeth. Let’s not treat them like human adults with a degree in childhood education.
Thank you to my cousin and her baby for being my models for this post 🥰
