Baby horses rely on us to be calm, collected and very experienced.
I never recommend a young horse for students unless they are willing to allow the professional to have the ride the first few years.
“Professional” is a loosely used term for someone who makes money riding and teaching.
It’s always best to work with someone who has produced trained horses and has experience with young and green horses.
I love training young horses but when they are 3 and 4 years old I generally stay on the ground and supervise someone who is younger to do the riding.
Riding young horses is a niche. Some riders are great at it.
No matter who is riding, 3-4 year olds do best with a team not just one person.
Often 2 people are better for working these horses.
Young horses who trust their ground person have that extra safety blanket as they learn the riders more intricate aids/signals.
Ground work for me is the first step to that special bond.
