I’m in awe of how much information we covered in a single weekend at Yogi Sharp’s The Equine Documentalist TED Tour stop in Northern California. A huge thank-you to Alice at HeartHorse Hoof Works and her team for hosting and creating the opportunity for all of us to continue developing our knowledge and skills.

There was next-level precision and nuance to Yogi’s work that I really appreciated. His lectures and practical demos gave us a repeatable framework for approaching farriery without losing sight of the horse as an individual, whole being. I think he challenged all of us to continue raising the standard of farriery, both as a practice and as part of the larger equine care team.

I’ve come home with new ways to assess horses and quantify change and I’m eager to integrate them into my work.

Very grateful I got to spend the weekend learning from him, meeting other driven and open-minded farriers, bodyworkers, and owners, and excited to bring it all back to the horses and my clients.

Coming back from Florida on an absolute high from our cohort’s latest module at The Vluggen Institute for Equine Osteopathy and Education. We spent a week completely enthralled, learning about the sacrum and the autonomic nervous system. Incredibly complex (to say the least…), but with the support of our classmates and other graduates, we made our way through!

This module in particular made a massive impact on the way I think about farriery and the body/hoof connection. It’s deeper in all the ways I imagined and much more. I am so excited to look at the horses in my care through this expanded lens and hope to increase my ability to make a positive impact in theirs and their owners lives. I can’t believe how much we’ve learned in the first year at the institute…and here’s to the next three!

Some exciting shifts in this mares front hooves after a month in EasyCare Triple D shoes. Namely sole depth, heel position, and thus overall HPA (hoof-pastern axis). For a few reasons, we switched to EDSS Freedom Glue-On shoes for this next cycle and I’m eager to see the results!

Last week’s application of a pair of EDSS Freedom Glue-On shoes for a horse with vet-diagnosed NPA (Negative Plantar Angle) in both hinds. Looking forward to seeing how she feels next month!

Different boots for different horses.

It probably goes without saying that each of our horses have different needs, and this is true with hooves as well. Getting a boot that fits YOUR horse is essential to successfully booting for performance and especially for rehab.

There are a lot of big name boot brands out there, but unfortunately that doesn’t always mean they carry a boot that will fit your specific needs, which includes much more than just physical fit!

Each of our herd members utilize boots, and they are each in a different pair for different reasons! Padding needs, hoof shape, scarring, durability/comfort for 24/7 turnout use, etc.

If you have questions about what goes into finding the perfect boot for you and your horse, I’ll be posting about that soon! Or, you can reach out to me directly and I’ll be more than happy to work with you on your specific case 😊

One of the few gals who I trust to give a barefoot trim while "barefoot" myself! I have found great joy in caring for the herd at my home and helping to facilitate their whole-horse rehabilitations. It's been an exciting, challenging, emotional, beautiful experience since everyone arrived earlier this summer!

We’re moving to Southern California!

Our stay in Virginia was always going to be short since my husband’s schooling for the Marine Corps was scheduled for less than a year. In the time we’ve been here we’ve enjoyed meeting lots of new friends both in the military and in the horse community, experienced one of the mildest winters VA has had in a while (not a single day of snow, the CA gal in me rejoiced 😛), I got to take some amazing trips for work, and have gained an invaluable amount of practical knowledge about horse keeping and trimming in wet environments.

So, the ✨important stuff✨ to know:

💛I will continue to serve all my clients around the DC area and Richmond through MAY 10

💛I will reopen for business serving northwest San Diego County and western Riverside County on JUNE 10 🥳🎉

If you are looking for a hoof care professional in Virginia, I have referrals in several areas for you!

Even though relocation has its challenges, one of the many things it has taught me is how to provide remote support to clients in different locations. Please know that if you are a current or former client of mine (or even if you’re not!) that I’m always available and willing to offer support from afar via any number of modalities: phone or video consultation, local referrals, etc.

I can’t wait to share more content once we get to our new home-base 🥰. We’ve got some really exciting things going on and I’m thrilled that we’ll be able to settle and grow in California for the next several years. Military life is a roller coaster of adventure, but I wouldn’t trade this life with Trev for anything! We’re both so incredibly grateful that this next chapter will be bringing us back to California and, most importantly, close to so many of our family members and friends again after several years of being in different states.

If you’re also in the Menifee/Temecula/Fallbrook area and would like to connect, or know the area and have any fun recommendations, I would love to hear from you! I cannot wait for our arrival this summer. 🌞

Congratulations to my colleague and friend Steph K Equestrian! IAABC is incredibly lucky to have her in their roster of trainers. She is truly a pioneer in both equine training and in teaching humans how to better interact and listen to their horses. If you ever have an opportunity to attend one of her clinics or learn with her in person, I urge you to seize the moment.

SKE is happy to announce that Steph is now IAABC certified! Specifically, Steph is now a Certified Horse Behavior Consultant (CHBC). Another certification to add to the books 👏❤️🐴

Some information about IAABC, from the IAABC website:

🌎 "The goals of the IAABC are to standardize and support the practice of animal behavior consulting, to provide quality, evidence-based education and peer and supervising mentoring, and to provide resources for pet owners needing advice. IAABC certifications are the most rigorous in the field, and assess people working in multiple species, with private clients and in shelters"

🌍 "IAABC members believe in the study and science of behavior consulting. We understand that animal behavior consultants can assist owners in managing and modifying problem behaviors, and in the process help strengthen the relationships between an owner and pet."

🌏 "IAABC members work to minimize the use of aversive stimuli and maximize the effective use of reinforcers to modify animal behavior. Members agree to adhere to the LIMA (least intrusive, minimally aversive) and the IAABC Code of Ethics principle upon joining. Within that framework, the IAABC welcomes diversity and openness. Positive regard, and respect for differences are among our core value, always striving toward solid, effective, positive reinforcement-based work."

Some information about behavior consultants, from the IAABC website:

📚"Animal behavior consultants are experts in the management, modification and prevention of problem behaviors in pets and other animals. They work with clients, often enlisting a team approach with their veterinarians, pet care givers and other members of the family, to assess and treat behavior problems."

— I’ve moved! We’re finally getting settled in Virginia and let me say that I cannot get over these luscious rolling green hills! I’m excited to do business out here while my husband goes to school for the Marine Corps for a few months. The horse hooves I’ve looked at so far are already so obviously different from Arizona because of the moisture in the ground and air. Stay tuned for more Virginia adventures in clicker training and barefoot trimming!
