Gulf Coast Reptile Refuge and Tortoise Sanctuary

Gulf Coast Reptile Refuge and Tortoise Sanctuary 501(c)3 non-profit reptile & exotics rescue, rehab, adoption, and tortoise sanctuary. We are home and foster based.
(1)

Here at GCRR, our mission is for no non-native reptiles to be abandoned, or released into the wild to fend for themselves. We are here as a resource for any and all reptile owners. We accept owner surrenders, rehabilitate the sick/injured, house the unadoptable, and adopt the adoptable to responsible, permanent homes.

We'd like to welcome Morticia to the Refuge. Morticia is a 3 year old Sulcata Tortoise. Her owner was no longer able to keep her due to life circumstances and he drove her out to us from central Alabama to make sure she'd be safe.

Happy update for Gemini.

Our vet suspects the wound is from an old ruptured abcess and that it should heal with daily topical medication!

So, this sweetness is headed back home with her foster mom with a hopeful prognosis.

Definitely happy news! ๐Ÿ’š

We could use some good vibes for one of our resident medical cases, Gemini.

Her foster mom Tracy has been working hard with her to get her back on track, but multiple layers of stuck shed in a localized area have revealed a pea sized hole in her abdomen that we suspect is the result of an old ruptured growth.

Our vet is fitting us in tomorrow morning at 10:45 am for an exam and to determine what the appropriate course of action is. It's not looking good.

Gemini was originally found as a stray in a hotel and was never claimed. Her finder gave her to a friend, and that friend tried to get her back on track but was unsuccessful. She then wound up reaching out to us.

If anyone would like to donate towards the cost of Gemini's vet bill, donations can be called in directly to:

Our account is under Gulf Coast Reptile Refuge. We would be so thankful. ๐Ÿ’š

Stay tuned for an update tomorrow.

Two HAPPY ADOPTION DAY announcements! I have fallen behind a little. So much going on behind the scenes here.

Waffles was chosen by an awesome family of repeat adopters.

Littlefoot wound up a foster fail, and his foster mom chose to adopt him.

Happy news for both! ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰

HAPPY ADOPTION DAY to Gecky! ๐ŸŽ‰

She went to the best of homes!

Thank you to her awesome adopter, and to her foster mom Melissa who did such an amazing job rehabbing her.

We have so many awesome adoptables still awaiting homes!

Good morning. It's $5 Friday friends.

We have been drowning in expenses behind the scenes (updates on that coming soon), and we are also facing significantly elevated electricity bills for the next few months due to the cold weather and having to run so many heat sources. This year we are at a higher capacity than we ever have been.

As usual, any $5 Friday proceeds wil be applied to the weekly cost of feeding the animals!

I cannot express how significant every donation is no matter the amount, as well as how thankful we are for any and all support from our community.

I have no energy for formalities right now, so this post is going to be straight forward.

We are heartbroken.

This evening while doing our routine checks on our handfull of medically needy animals, we discovered that Chrome has passed.

We have been blessed with some amazing turnarounds with severely critical intakes, but it turns out Chrome was just too far gone and the damage was too severe to come back from.

This beautiful animal suffered for who knows how long, as a result of a careless and irresponsible human. Whether he fell ill and was THEN dumped like trash to fend for himself (which is what all sensible signs point to,) or he escaped someone somehow and then fell ill for however long he was trying to survive in non-native territory (which would've been quite some time)......it all boils down to human carelessness.

Disgusting is what it is.

I will NEVER understand how people can watch/allow/cause an animal to suffer.

The ONLY solace I can find in Chrome's story is that he was found by CARING humans (the folks who called in to animal control when they discovered him in their yard,) secured by another caring human (the ACO who then reached out and transported him to us,) and that we provided him with veterinary care, and a comfortable/proper habitat in his final days.

Another life disregarded/lost due to human negligence.

These type of losses hurt the soul. We are tired.

Chrome, I am SO sorry. We tried, very hard.
