💜 This week we celebrated a milestone — times three! 💜

At Sunstone, we recognize every anniversary with a special gift: a custom jacket with a different color for each year. This week, Dr. Klaser, Jennifer, and Arlene all received their six-year jackets — in purple!

Even more special? They all started around the same time and have been a close-knit Internal Medicine team ever since. Their bond, trust, and shared commitment to your pets has only deepened over the years — and it shows in every interaction, every treatment plan, every thoughtful conversation with families.

🐾 Dr. Klaser is a board-certified internal medicine specialist who’s as passionate about helping families navigate complex diagnoses as she is about campfire cooking and coastal sunsets. She’s a calm, curious, and deeply empathetic leader.

🐾 Jennifer brings warmth, professionalism, and decades of experience across nearly every corner of veterinary medicine. She’s always thinking ahead, making sure clients feel supported and pets feel safe.

🐾 Arlene is the kind of teammate who makes people (and pets!) feel instantly at ease. Her compassion shines through in every interaction, and she’s especially gifted at building trust and keeping communication clear, kind, and comforting.

Together, they’re a true team — and we’re so lucky to have them. 💜

🐾 Huckleberry’s journey is a testament to the power of teamwork, perseverance, and love.

This sweet 3-year-old English Setter first came to Sunstone in October 2023 for evaluation of a suspected liver shunt. He was seen by Dr. Joshua Elliott, a board-certified internal medicine specialist, who diagnosed him with a congenital portosystemic shunt after a CT scan. Huckleberry underwent surgery with Dr. Lillian Su, a board-certified veterinary surgeon, who placed an ameroid constrictor to help correct the shunt.

His road to recovery included some bumps—like a post-op incision complication that required a surgical revision—but with the help of his family and care team, Huckleberry handled it all with resilience and heart.

After surgery and once his treatment plan had been developed, Huckleberry began working with Dr. Jani Remsburg, our internal medicine fellow, for continued care and monitoring. When new GI symptoms developed, additional diagnostics—including another ultrasound with Dr. Elliott and endoscopic biopsies—led to a diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (with an eosinophilic component).

Along the way, Huckleberry has also dealt with urinary stones, dietary indiscretions, and a past bout of giardia. But thanks to his dedicated family and the coordinated care between Sunstone doctors and his primary veterinarian, he’s now on a treatment plan that works.

🩺 We’re so grateful for the opportunity to support pets like Huckleberry through collaboration and continuity of care. He came in this week for a recheck—and he’s doing great!

🐾 Bacon Bits: A Team Effort, Fueled by Love 🐾

If you’ve ever met Bacon Bits, you know he’s impossible to forget. This sweet 8-year-old Frenchie has been visiting Sunstone since 2018, and every time he walks through our doors, he’s greeted like a celebrity—because to us, he is.

Bacon Bits has a complex medical history, but he’s doing well today thanks to a team effort. His long-standing internal medicine specialist, Dr. Regina Tobin, has guided his care with thoughtful attention over the past five years. She’s one of many people—alongside his primary veterinarian, several other specialists, and of course, his devoted mom (a veterinary technician herself)—who have worked together to help him thrive. 💙

We also want to give a big shoutout to Jen, one of his go-to technicians here at Sunstone, who always goes the extra mile for her patients—and to every team member who has played a role in his care. Bacon Bits is a shining example of what’s possible with collaborative medicine, compassionate professionals, and a client who truly shows up for her pet.

🎆 Fireworks, food, and fun—keep it safe for your pet this 4th of July! 🐾

Sunstone Veterinary Specialists will be open for emergency care during the holiday weekend. If your pet needs urgent help, we’re here for you:
🕐 Friday, July 4th: 7am–7pm
🕐 Saturday, July 5th through Monday, July 7th: Open 24/7
🌙 Overnight care is available every night for hospitalized patients.

The 4th of July is one of the busiest weekends for emergency veterinary hospitals. Here are some common holiday hazards we see—and tips to help you avoid them:
💥 Firework anxiety – Talk to your primary vet ahead of time about ways to help your pet stay calm.
🔥 Burns & trauma – Curious noses and paws can be injured by fireworks or hot debris.
🥴 Toxin ingestion – Fireworks, pool chemicals, and some human foods can contain harmful substances.
🍗 BBQ scraps & party food – Corn cobs, bones, fatty foods, and skewers can lead to serious GI problems.
🌡️ Heatstroke – Keep pets cool and hydrated, and never leave them unattended outside.
🐶 Dog fights – Overstimulated pets or unfamiliar guests can cause conflict.

Quick tips to keep your pet safe:
• Keep them indoors during fireworks.
• Store food and trash securely.
• Supervise time outside and dog-dog interactions.
• Ensure they have up-to-date tags and a microchip.

Meet Bobo! This sweet 13-year-old Manx mix has visiting Sunstone since 2022. 💛 He originally came to see Dr. Joshua Elliott, one of our board-certified internal medicine specialists, and has been regularly working with our internal medicine fellow, Dr. Jani Remsburg, to manage his hyperthyroidism and chronic GI disease.

Thanks to the dedication of Bobo’s amazing family and the collaborative care between our team, his primary veterinarian, and an external I-131 treatment provider, Bobo is doing well and preparing for the next step in his care journey.

At his most recent visit, Bobo had a thorough exam and lab testing to confirm he’s a good candidate for I-131 therapy (a targeted radioactive iodine treatment for hyperthyroidism). Mild anemia was noted, which may require some adjustments to his treatment plan—ultimately at the discretion of the I-131 team. While Sunstone does not perform I-131 therapy, we remain closely involved in the diagnostic and pre-treatment process, and will stay in contact with his treatment provider throughout.

And while he may not have shown it on his face, Bobo did enjoy a few snacks during his visit. We’re calling it mild enthusiasm. 😼

We’re so grateful to work alongside compassionate pet parents and veterinary partners to make sure pets like Bobo receive the thoughtful, individualized care they deserve. 🐾

🐾 Meet Magnus, the incredibly sweet 5-year-old Doberman!

Magnus first came to see Dr. Tobin and our Internal Medicine team after routine bloodwork from his primary veterinarian showed elevated ALT levels—a liver enzyme that can signal inflammation or injury. His ultrasound looked normal, so we started digging into possible underlying causes.

Based on Magnus' history, breed and age, copper hepatopathy is a likely explanation for his persistently abnormal labs. A liver biopsy is the only way to prove this diagnosis. For a variety of reasons, Magnus’ family opted to begin treatment without pursuing a liver biopsy. Outside of this breed, chelation therapy without a liver biopsy is not recommended.

He’s now on a prescription low-copper diet and medications that help remove copper from his liver and support overall liver function. Today, he’s back for follow-up labs so we can monitor his response and guide next steps.

Our team works closely with Magnus’s primary veterinarian and his amazing family to ensure seamless, compassionate care every step of the way. 💙 We love seeing this sweet boy and being part of his journey!

Teamwork in action - and one very lucky little dog.

When a 9-year-old chihuahua mix came to Sunstone, our internal medicine team found a large hairball lodged in the stomach. Endoscopy showed inflammation and mild ulceration. If it couldn’t be removed minimally invasively, surgery was next. We didn’t know it was a hairball going in - and these are notoriously tricky to retrieve endoscopically.

Dr. Elliott (internal medicine) led the procedure. Dr. Remsburg (IM fellow) assisted. Dr. Su (surgery) collaborated, prepared to take over if conversion was needed. Dr. Momany (intern on Dr. Su’s service) joined the effort. CVT Colleen monitored anesthesia, and veterinary assistant Marissa operated the grasper with precision.

Removing a dense, tangled foreign body like this takes skill - and a whole lot of creative thinking. Everyone in the room contributed ideas and insight. At Sunstone, we don’t just value teamwork - we rely on it.

And it paid off! The hairball was successfully removed via endoscopy. Biopsies were taken, and the patient was sent home later that day, already feeling better.

Flexible, collaborative, determined care - that’s the heart of what we do.

From sick pup to thriving queen 👑

Molly, an adorable French Bulldog, first came to see our Internal Medicine team in April 2021 for lifelong GI issues. Under the care of Dr. Debra Klaser, she was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and began a long journey of treatment and recovery.

She faced it all—vomiting, diarrhea, recurrent Giardia infections, and even a phase of severe hemorrhagic diarrhea. But by summer 2022, Molly was finally feeling better with a treatment plan that worked for her. 💪

Thanks to her amazing family and Dr. Klaser’s care, Molly is stable and thriving. She came in today for her 6-month recheck, and we loved catching up (and getting all the snuggles)! 💕

Way to go, Molly girl! 🐾
