Things I wish I knew as a beginner in bitework 🐾

Bitework is growing in popularity with more and more folks getting working breeds or just looking for an outlet for their dogs.

It’s a great way to do some fun training that builds our dogs, instead of just shutting them down (like so much pet training is).

I’ve personally been doing bitework with Minka since she was a puppy (we took too long of a break for a bit 😬) and it’s made me an immensely better handler- better at reading her, better in my movements, and created a better relationship between the two of us.

Whether you just want to learn play mechanics or compete in a sport, I highly recommend giving bitework a try & seeing if it’s a good fit for you and your dog.

Obviously a lot more happened between then and now, and maybe someday I’ll share all of that with you…

But I do just want to add— sometimes we get caught up in the wrong things. Thinking more is better, or losing ourselves in the search of some ideal life.

But I recently had a good friend of mine say “We owe everything to the dogs.”

The life I have, the friends, the experiences- everything is because of the dogs & owners. They have given me what I have today.

I’m nobody without them and while I may have gotten a little lost along the way, I always come back to that.

It’s always been for the dogs 💛

Over my career, I’ve had the pleasure of working with some of the best dog trainers out there— here’s some pieces of advice that are on repeat in my head, that I take with me into every training session.

Mark first, then reward- good marker training emphasizes a separation between our marker and reward. Seems basic, but everyone misses this.

Slow down— in how you move in your sessions to what you expect from your dog. You have a lifetime together, there’s no rush.

Get clear on what you expect from your dog— reframe your thinking from “why is my dog doing this” to “how can I better communicate what I expect to my dog”.

Focus on the state of mind first, then the behavior— I learned this while training Minka. I was so focused on the behaviors that I disregarded the energy she brought to the behaviors.

Act how you want your dog to act— they’ll follow your lead, so get control over your emotions and they’ll do the same.

It ain’t that serious— we got our dogs to have fun, don’t lose the plot while chasing perfection.

Of course there are other ways to reward besides food, but in my experience food rewards are the easiest for pet parents.

So grab a treat pouch, measure out your dog’s food for the day, and get to training.
