Understanding Hemangiosarcoma in Dogs
ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ Hemangiosarcoma is a type of cancer that affects the blood vessels, and while it’s most commonly found in the spleen, liver, or heart, it can be difficult to detect until it becomes serious.

This disease often affects middle-aged to older dogs, particularly larger breeds, and can progress quickly without showing early symptoms.
While we can’t always prevent hemangiosarcoma, early detection and regular wellness exams can help us catch health changes before they become emergencies.

Here are some signs that may warrant a closer look:
āš ļø Sudden weakness or collapse
āš ļø Pale gums
āš ļø Rapid breathing or swelling of the abdomen
āš ļø Loss of appetite or lethargy

These symptoms can also be related to many other conditions, so it’s important not to panic, but it is crucial to act quickly.
If your dog seems ā€œoffā€ and you’re not sure why, we’re here to help.

šŸ“ž Call (775) 782-3693 to schedule an exam or discuss your concerns.

Your peace of mind—and your dog’s health—matter to us.

Pet Hydration: More Than Just a Water Bowl
šŸ’§ With the heat continuing across Northern Nevada, proper hydration isn’t optional—it’s essential.

Pets can become dehydrated quickly in our dry, high-elevation climate, especially if they’re active or spending time outdoors. Unlike humans, dogs and cats don’t sweat efficiently, so even a little dehydration can have big consequences.

Keep your pets cool, safe, and hydrated with these tips:
āœ”ļø Provide access to clean, fresh water at all times—inside and outside
āœ”ļø Pack extra water on hikes or trips, especially to the lake or mountains
āœ”ļø Encourage pets to drink with chilled bowls, pet-safe frozen treats, or ice cubes
āœ”ļø Watch for early signs of dehydration: dry gums, lethargy, sunken eyes, or excessive panting

If you’re concerned your pet isn’t drinking enough, or they’ve been acting off in the heat, don’t wait—call us.

Hydration issues can escalate quickly in summer.

Would You Know How to Move an Injured Pet?

ā›‘ļø Emergencies happen fast, and if your pet is sick, injured, or in distress, how you move them can make a big difference.

Whether it’s a sudden accident on a hike, a heat-related collapse, or a painful injury at home, handling your pet carefully and calmly can help prevent further harm on the way to the vet.

Here are a few quick tips:
āœ”ļø Stay calm. Speak gently and move slowly.
āœ”ļø Don’t assume they won’t bite. Even the sweetest pet may react out of pain or fear. Use a towel or blanket to gently wrap or shield their head if needed.
āœ”ļø Use support. A blanket, board, or large towel can act as a stretcher for larger pets.
āœ”ļø Keep them level. Avoid twisting or tilting the spine or limbs.
āœ”ļø Call us immediately to schedule an emergency visit - we’ll help guide you through the next steps: (775) 782-3693

Our team is here 7 days a week to provide urgent and emergency care. Don’t second-guess...just call. We’ll take it from there.

Sunburn Isn’t Just a Human Problem

ā˜€ļø The high desert sun in Northern Nevada is no joke—and yes, pets can get sunburned, too.

Short-haired dogs, dogs with light-colored coats, and hairless breeds are especially vulnerable, particularly in sensitive areas such as the nose, ears, belly, and inner thighs.

Here’s how to protect your pet from painful sun exposure:
āœ”ļø Limit direct sun time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
āœ”ļø Provide shaded rest areas during walks, hikes, or backyard play
āœ”ļø Use pet-safe sunscreen—never human products
āœ”ļø Watch for redness, peeling, or tenderness, and call us if you notice signs of sunburn

Not sure if your pet is at risk? We’re happy to advise on safe sun protection based on breed, coat type, and activity level.

GDV Awareness – What Dog Owners Should Know About Bloat
🚨 Bloat in dogs isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s a life-threatening emergency.
Gastric dilation-volvulus (GDV) happens when a dog’s stomach fills with gas and twists on itself. It cuts off blood flow, causes intense pain, and can lead to death in hours if untreated.

It’s most common in large or deep-chested breeds, but any dog can be at risk—especially after eating too quickly, exercising after meals, or swallowing excess air.

Know the signs of bloat:
āš ļø Distended or tight abdomen
āš ļø Non-productive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes up)
āš ļø Restlessness or pacing
āš ļø Sudden weakness or collapse
āš ļø Rapid breathing, drooling, or signs of severe discomfort
If you see these symptoms, don’t wait.
šŸ“ž Call Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital immediately to schedule a same-day emergency visit: (775) 782-3693

Fast action can save your dog’s life.

šŸ’¦ Does your pet dive in or stay dry?
Here in Northern Nevada, we’ve got lakes, rivers, and backyard sprinklers—plenty of ways for pets to stay cool. But not every pet is a water lover.

Tell us:
What’s your pet’s water personality?
šŸ• Total water dog – can’t keep them out!
😼 Nope – strictly paws-on-dry-land
🐾 Only if it’s shallow and supervised
šŸ› They only swim… in the bathtub (grudgingly)

Drop your answer in the comments — or better yet, tag us in a photo of your pet’s splash (or no-splash) summer moment!
