We've had so many exciting adoptions lately we can barely keep up!!

Bernadette (buckskin) and Steger (palomino) both came to Longmeadow at separate times. Bernadette came as an owner surrender in July of 2024 and Steger found his way to us in February of this year, also as an owner surrender. Both spent their times here being doted upon and waiting for the perfect people. How lucky that the two of them found a home together! In August, both of these pretty pals found their forever home together and get to spend the rest of their days grazing and being loved.

Little Miss Annie came to us in May of this year as an owner surrender. She was small but mighty and had the spunkiest personality. It didn't take long for her to find her forever home! Three months after her arrival, Annie hopped up into her trailer and left Longmeadow to begin her new start with her new family.

Jocelyn (bay), Mia (bay with a star), and AJ (appaloosa) also came to Longmeadow at separate times. AJ came to Longmeadow in 2021 and Jocelyn arrived in 2022, both as owner surrenders. Mia, however, was part of the tractor trailer wreck on highway 44 in 2020. You can read more about the story here : https://longmeadowrescueranch.org/longmeadow-rescue-ranch-caring-for-horses-rescued-in-horse-trailer-accident-on-i-44-in-franklin-county/ We are so happy all three found a home together, but we'd be lying if we said we weren't a little *extra* excited for Mia. She has been here since the wreck, waiting for the right person, and boy did these three girls hit the jackpot. The best part? Those three were bonded best friends, all living in the same pasture before they left!

Coachella the little gray pony came to Longmeadow around the time of the music festival, hence the name. She spent some time with our training team and it didn't take long for them to fall in love with her. Coachella had that typical pony attitude with a soft spot for kids and we knew her time at Longmeadow would be short. Almost 4 months to the day after her arrival, Coachella went home with two new best buddies, where she will get to experience what it feels like to be part of a family.

And finally, our chunky boy Bocce the mini donkey hopped up into his trailer to join his new family in Minnesota! He really lucked out on his forever home. Rick and Suzanne, who have been longtime supporters of the Ranch, as well as previous adopters, decided they wanted to open their home to a mini. Little (or not-so-little...) Bocce was the perfect match! Now, he gets to spend his days grazing (in a grazing muzzle, of course) with his equine buddies in beautiful weather, and he has a lifetime of love ahead of him!

We wish all of our recent adopters and their new furry friends a lifetime of love and happiness. Thank you to all for following our stories and supporting us and the animals. 💗🐎

We love updates from our adopters!! Rose was adopted last December and has had quite the summer! Here is what her family has to say:

"Just sending you an early morning Rose update. She & Ella went to the Lincoln County Fair 4H horse show & took Reserve high point in her age. Rose definitely stood out next to all those Western horses. They both enjoyed all the fun closes.

The big problem was the night before there was a rodeo at the fair & the animals had to stay in the arena overnight because their trailer was stuck in the mud. So when we arrived the horse area was full of bulls! The animals were moved to pens near the speed shoots so every time the kids would ride by in the arena, the bulls would snort at them! But Rosie still did great & had a blast.

Then, this last weekend, she & Ella entered the Troy Rodeo Queen contest & took 1st runner up. Last minute the arena was switched because they were demolishing the cattle barn at the fairgrounds. So instead of riding the horsemanship pattern in the horse arena (far away from the chaos) they had to do it in the rodeo arena with all the flying banners & cattle watching. Rose did not panic, but she just didn’t like all the noise & movement and they broke the pattern. I was just so proud of her that she didn’t spook or loose her mind. As part of the contest, they also had to do a lap at a gallop with the queen’s wave & then again with the flag. By that last lap Rosie did great! Her flag lap was the best & what Ella’s been working with her for months.

After the horsemanship pattern they had to enter with all the rodeo riders in the grand entry with thousands of people in the stands, loud speakers with music & announcers, flags and dozens of other riders. It was a loud, crazy mad-house. Rose did great! She didn't love the loud music but she took it in stride."

We are so happy Rose found her people who bring her out of her comfort zone and provide her with the opportunities to be the best horse she can be!

If you have an update and photos of a Longmeadow alum (horse, pig, goat, chicken, or any other animal!), we'd love to share it! You can send an update (and photos!!) to Anna at [email protected]

You may read about our successful adoptions, visit us on the weekends, and keep up with our stories, but do you know how Longmeadow came to be? As we honor the spirit of Labor Day (a day dedicated to the contributions of hardworking individuals full of compassion and innovation), we reflect on the life and legacy of a man whose work ethic and generosity laid the foundation for Longmeadow Rescue Ranch.

Longmeadow, once known as Packwood Longmeadow Farm, became part of the Humane Society of Missouri in 1988, thanks to a generous bequest from George Packwood, Jr. A dedicated supporter of the Humane Society, Mr. Packwood donated the land specifically to provide a safe haven for ranch animals and a gift that continues to change lives today.

Mr. Packwood’s story is one of grit, ingenuity, and purpose. He started his career as an engineer and later worked as a signal construction foreman for the Frisco Railroad. After realizing the industrial soaps that were used at work were leaving his hands raw, he invented a gentler alternative with a custom soap dispenser. With his new invention ready for public use, he began marketing the product himself and realized it was much more enjoyable than sitting behind a desk as a consulting engineer. By 1926, he had launched his own business, which was later sold to the Calgon Corporation in the 1950s.

Mr. Packwood was quoted as saying, “In the world of business, if you perfect something good, you can get up on the housetop and flap your wings and crow about it.”

This Labor Day, we do just that. We honor Mr. Packwood’s vision and hard work by continuing to build upon his legacy in creating something good for the animals who call Longmeadow home. From our dedicated ranch team to every volunteer, adopter, and supporter, we want you to know that you are all part of this mission.

Happy Labor Day from all of us at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. Let’s keep working, building, and crowing about the good we do together. 🐎🐷🐔🦆🐓🐐🐑

We have another heartwarming adoption story to celebrate! Zulla and Erec went home together last month!

Zulla arrived at Longmeadow as part of a high-profile rescue investigation last year. When she first came to us, she was in rough shape, both emotionally and physically. It took months of patient rehabilitation, extensive veterinary exams, farrier care, and routine treatments to help her heal and regain her strength. With her gentle disposition and kind eyes, we hoped she would find the forever home she deserved. After such a long history of neglect, however, we knew it might take time.

Meanwhile, Erec, a sweet senior horse with a young spirit, had also been waiting patiently for another chance at his forever home. Both of these horses had stories that tugged at our hearts, and we held onto hope that someone special would see in them what we did.

Then, eight months after her arrival, Zulla’s moment finally came. Not only did she find a loving family, but she also found a lifelong companion in Erec. As July came to an end, Brittany and her family opened their hearts and home to both horses, bringing their Longmeadow chapters to a joyful end and marking the beginning of a beautiful new one.

We’re over the moon to see these two deserving souls head off to a life filled with love, companionship, and peace (well, maybe not so peaceful at times😂) . Knowing they’ll spend their golden years together, surrounded by care and kindness, makes us ecstatic.

Here’s a recent update (and photos) from their new family:

“We absolutely love these two. They bonded with each other so quickly, and they’re getting along great with our other two horses. (We didn’t realize until now, but apparently we have a thing for bays and paints 😂😂). They’re incredibly sweet, come when they’re called, and absolutely adore the kids. We’re so happy to have them.”

Zulla and Erec, you’ll always be part of the Longmeadow family, but now, you’re finally home.

It's , so we just had to spotlight this special girl who is available for adoption and sweet as can be. Meet Stoney!

Stoney, a 15.1hh Quarter Horse, arrived at Longmeadow in May 2024, quickly catching the eye of staff and volunteers with her sleek, slender frame, adorable facial markings, and kind temperament. We were eager to get to know her better once her quarantine period ended and looked forward to her evaluation to see what this mare knew.

However, during her initial veterinary exam, Stoney was diagnosed with a progressive dental condition called EOTRH (points to anyone who can tell us what that stands for - no googling!), which required the removal of all her incisors. Throughout the procedure and recovery, Stoney was a true champ. She was patient and calm as staff flushed her mouth and packed her gums daily during her recovery. Then, after several weeks of healing, she was finally ready to be evaluated by our trainers!

Upon evaluation, our trainers discovered that Stoney did have prior training under saddle. She responded well to neck reining and seemed comfortable and familiar with having a rider on her back. However, Stoney is definitely more of a forward-moving horse, which means she can get a little impatient, especially when asked to halt or stand still for too long. Because of this, we feel Stoney would thrive with an intermediate rider who can gently but firmly guide her, correct unwanted behaviors, and help her continue building trust and consistency. She would also do wonderfully as a lead line horse for a child. With the right rider or handler, we believe she has the potential to be a fun and rewarding partner!

Stoney is a beautiful mare with the sweetest personality on the ground. Thanks to her missing teeth, she often has her tongue sticking out, which only adds to her adorable charm. She loves attention and is always poking her head out of her stall to greet visitors. She is easy to catch in turnout and gets along well with both mares and geldings. She stands excellently for the farrier and our vets.

And as for her dental condition? She now only requires a daily mouth flush to get rid of any hay or grain that gets packed into the pockets left in her gums, but she stands there and handles it like a champ for our staff members. We soak her senior grain to make eating more comfortable for her as well.

We are so surprised this girl hasn't found her forever home. Do you think you are who she's been looking for? Visit our website to learn more about Stoney and our adoption process!

Jubilee was transported to Longmeadow in July of 2022 by the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Task Force (ACT) after her owner could no longer care for her. Upon arrival, she had a body condition score of three out of ten and weighed 905 pounds. ACT members noted she had access to square bales of hay and fresh water on the property where she lived, but her weight did not reflect that. This was likely due to poor dental health, since Jubilee’s previous owner did not have any routine medical care in her vet history.

As soon as she arrived, Longmeadow staff members began Jubilee’s rehabilitation. She was seen by a vet and received a much-needed dental float, along with necessary vaccines and dewormer. Then, after she gained some weight, she was seen by our farrier and started on a routine schedule. Before we knew it, Jubilee was healthy and ready to find her home. She was adopted but returned shortly after, due to no fault of her own. Once she came back to Longmeadow, she spent her days in a pasture waiting patiently for the right person to scoop her up and take her home.

Artemis initially came to Longmeadow as a filly alongside several other emaciated horses in 2020. We quickly fell in love with her sweet disposition and beautiful color. She blew us away with how quickly she picked up on haltering and leading, as well as picking her feet up for the farrier. She had nothing but love to give, despite the poor circumstances she grew up in.

Artemis, just like Jubilee, was adopted soon after she arrived at Longmeadow but returned a few years later due to no fault of her own. After her return, she joined a herd out in the pasture and enjoyed her days basking in the sun and eating her hay.

A couple months into Summer, Conni came to Longmeadow looking for a horse. After working with our trainer and meeting both girls, Conni knew Artemis and Jubilee were exactly what she was looking for in her next adventure. She made the decision to adopt both mares and take them home. On the day of their adoption, we loaded Artemis and Jubilee into their trailer and off they went to a life of love and attention with Conni…together!

Thank you, Conni, for giving these two girlies a THIRD chance to a life they deserve!
