😳📣We are seeing a big increase lately in emergency pyometra cases. Did you know that 25% of intact female dogs may have a pyo before their 10th birthday? That's a BIG risk and a BIG number. 📣😳

* You are most likely to see pyo symptoms 2-6 weeks after a pet's heat cycle.

* There may or may not be va**nal discharge. With an "open pyo", some of the infection is able to discharge from the va**na. With a "closed pyo", the risk of uterine rupture is high without immediate treatment.

*Spay is the ONLY way to both prevent AND treat a pyometra. The difference is that a low-cost preventative spay may cost around $100-150 at a low-cost spay/neuter clinic. An emergency spay for a pyometra can be $4000+ at many vet offices.

*Pyometra is EXTREMELY painful and DEADLY without emergency treatment.

You've heard the old saying "A ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" and that is certainly true when it comes to pyometra. SPAY YOUR DOGS AND CATS EARLY!

We have limited ability to help with active pyometra cases since we only have a vet inhouse 6-8 days a month so be proactive and sign up your dog or cat for spay today! ➡🚨 waalrescue.org/sif/🚨⬅

Today, we were honored to receive an award from Best Friends Animal Society recognizing the Ulysses Animal Shelter for achieving No-Kill status for 2025. Best Friends Animal Society is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting preventable euthanasia in shelters across the country.

This recognition means our shelter achieved a live-release rate of over 90% for every animal that entered our care throughout the year. While this is an incredible accomplishment for any shelter or rescue organization, it is especially meaningful for a municipal shelter. As an open-admission shelter, we are committed to helping every animal in need—regardless of age, breed, size, health, or behavior.

To our adopters and rescue partners, thank you for opening your hearts and homes to our animals. Every adoption not only changes a pet's life but also creates space for another animal in need. Thank you for giving them a second chance at "furever".

To our volunteers, donors, and community members, thank you for giving your time, resources, and support to help care for the animals who rely on us.

This award is more than a recognition of our shelter—it represents what a community can accomplish when we work together. Achieving No-Kill status is not just a milestone for the Ulysses Animal Shelter, it is an achievement for the entire Ulysses community.

Thank you for believing in our mission and for helping us give every animal the opportunity for a brighter future. We couldn't have done it without you!
