As I look back at my first year as a wildlife rehabilitator, I would like to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. Despite my efforts to maintain an active online presence, my social media updates have been less frequent than anticipated, due in large part to the demands of my full-time job, family responsibilities, and the challenges associated with being a new rehabber. Initially, I had expected a more gradual transition into this role, focusing on the establishment of my at-home rehab, ongoing education, enclosure construction, and professional networking. However, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with several exceptional federally permitted rehabbers, gaining invaluable experience and skills in the process. One of the highlights of my first year involved assisting with the rehabilitation of waterfowl, including the successful release of numerous goslings and ducklings. I also dedicated many hours to raising nestlings in my incubator, carefully monitoring their progress from sunrise to sundown. Furthermore, I was granted permission by the state to assist in the capture of a sick Bald Eagle, an experience that proved to be both challenging, rewarding, and heartbreaking.

I hope that this year, I will be able to share more of my rehabilitation journey with everyone and continue to help wild birds thrive.

Recently, a tufted titmouse got trapped in an outdoor sticky fly trap. I'm puzzled as to when these traps became acceptable for outdoor use, the natural habitat of flies. Please refrain from utilizing them outdoors, birds sadly fly into them and become stuck to the glue damaging their feathers. Although I managed to safely remove the bird, it was excessively stressed and eventually succumbed to its distress.

Well baby season has officially started. Our incubator is half full of hatchling House Sparrows.

Did you know that hatchlings need to be fed every 20 minutes from sunrise to sunset?

Have you ever seen a freshly hatched 2-gram baby bird before?

Unfortunately, this little bird was found on the pavement with no nest or mother in sight. Despite the odds, this hatchling seems to be a fighter.

NEWC is hosting a wildlife triage course for veterinarians and technicians. If you have an interest in working with wildlife, this would be an excellent continuing education opportunity.
