Fish Legs started limping last week but was still playing. So I wasn't super concerned. The vet is worried he broke his front leg. I circled the swollen area. He will randomly limp but is still playing like nothing is wrong. He came from a large scale hoarding case on a dairy farm in Marion County. He's semi feral. Until now he's been healthy & happy. We caught him at 8 weeks. His brother is Hiccup. The rest of the litter was k※※led by other dogs. He goes in his crate. He'll snuggle with me in bed. The rest of the time he jumps away from my touch unless I have food in my hand. The exam is $50.
Lulu is at least 14 years old. She came with the New Orleans house. She was the only dog (of six) that was too feral for adoption. She's now completely domestic. A week ago she started being really weak in her back end. Then she wouldn't take people food from me. She loves food so I knew something was wrong. The last two nights she's had very rapid shallow breathing. During the day she's fine. I'm worried about congestive heart failure. She had heartworms when I got her. The exam is $50 and if meds are needed that'll increase the cost.
Pandam was referred to me by another rescue. He has double ear infections. I'm concerned by how he walks. He needs a good neuro exam. Plus he really needs anxiety meds. I still can't touch him after having him months. He's a shar pei that came from an abuse case in New Orleans. The ear treatment is $50 and the exam is $50. Total is $100.
Ugly needs a refill for his medication for Laryngeal Paralysis. He struggles to breathe without it. Doxepin is prescribed off label. There's not much else you can due until the dog struggles to breathe and then they need surgery. He needs an exam to have medication prescribed. He also needs his ears treated. He's always struggled with ear infections. The ear treatment is $50 and the exam is $50. Total is $100
The total for these four is $300.

Thanks to the ones that donated. We've gotten 3 packs of the food so far. And mine haven't came yet. This is huge. I use a can of chicken every day for Lulu and Not Bruno. I have to put some at the bottom of the bowl or they won't eat. The others can't eat chicken.

Mila needs an annual and dry eye test. Her eyes always have discharge. I have been told shes been like this since she was born. She has multiple healed ulcers.

I had planned to spay Mila and the group and then return them. Instead when I got to the property I knew I couldn't leave them. They were in a small pen without any shelter. There was a hole cut in the fence, where they stuck their hand through to dump food on the ground. I was told they kept having babies but they didn't understand why the babies kept passing. I wasn't surprised once I saw the conditions. It was right before a week long freeze.
Mila is three years old. Shes 25 lbs. She has a body like a corgi. Her fur reminds me of a pomeranian. She stands on her back legs and waves her front paws. She'd love a calm foster home so she can go through heartworm treatment.

Firefly emergence tracker — third week of May.

The first flashes of the season are appearing in the deep South. The wave moves north over the next several weeks, reaching the mid-Atlantic and Northeast by mid-June to early July depending on latitude and overnight temperatures 🌿

Right now, in most of the eastern US, the fireflies are still underground — either pupating or finishing their larval stage in the top layer of soil and leaf litter. The timing of emergence depends on when the soil warms enough to trigger the final transformation.

🌱 Where the wave stands:

- Southern states — adults already flying and flashing in warm, humid evenings
- Mid-Atlantic — pupation underway in the soil. Emergence in a few weeks
- Northeast — still in larval stage. Emergence depends on soil temperature reaching the threshold, which varies by how warm May has been

☀️ What determines when you see them:

- Latitude — southern yards flash first, northern yards last
- Soil temperature — warm soil speeds up pupation. A warm, wet May means earlier emergence
- Rainfall — moist soil improves survival through the pupal stage
- Lawn chemicals — granular pesticides applied in April and May reach the pupal layer directly. This is the window where the most damage happens

🌿 How to prepare:

- Stop granular lawn pesticide in areas where fireflies appeared last summer — the pupae are in that exact soil right now
- Leave a section of leaf litter undisturbed along garden edges and fence lines. The pupae are in it
- Reduce outdoor lighting after dark once flashing begins — artificial light interferes with the flash patterns they use to find each other
- Best viewing is in the first hour after sunset, on humid evenings, near field edges or unmowed strips. Sit still and let your eyes adjust
