** LOCAL RABIES POSTIVE CAT **
On Thursday, February 8, 2024, local police received a call for an aggressive animal in the Hidden Springs community of Franconia Township, Montgomery County. Upon arrival, officers discovered a black and white cat acting aggressively and foaming at the mouth, the cat was safely captured and transported to Telford Veterinary Hospital for evaluation. Testing was performed by Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory which revealed the cat to be Rabies positive. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture reported that during 2023, Montgomery County had 5 cats, 3 bats and 4 raccoons that were verified through laboratory testing to be Rabies positive. At this time, the animal no longer poses a threat to the public.
Anyone who may have encountered this specific cat and/or any wild/domestic animal acting erratically AND sustained a scratch or bite injury should contact their healthcare provider immediately. Montgomery County Health Department recommends “Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water. See your physician immediately for medical treatment. Contact the Montgomery County Office of Public Health at 610-278-5117 and speak with a Disease Intervention Specialist, who will start an investigation and provide you with the necessary information.” Please do not approach wild animals or any animal exhibiting bizarre behavior, this may include (but is not limited to): aggression, loss of fear, daytime activity by a nocturnal species, atypical attraction to noise and human activity as well as excessive vocalization
We commend these police officers for recognizing this potential danger to the community and safely securing the cat for evaluation.
