Getting the official papers needed for Keaton to enter Canada with us, as well as the official papers we need for him to re-enter the U.S. We're headed out on another epic road trip in a couple weeks, this time to Maine and plan to spend a few days in Canada on an island only available by ferry. Squeeee! Thanks to Nottely Oaks Animal Hospital for Keaton's well-pet exam and the formal Vet Health Certificate.

A perfect start to a Saturday morning—leisurely time with Keaton. After a way-to-busy week, it was past time for a long sniffy walk with my boy in the wooded area outside our fenced acreage. Now it's time for a pasture romp. Whatever you do today, may your dog be by your side. ❤️

One morning, while I was out walking this big heart on four legs, he suddenly stopped at the foot of a bush. Normally, he pulls on the leash to run, sniff, explore. But this time, he froze. His gaze locked in place, ears standing tall. And then, very slowly, he moved closer.

Three tiny bundles were trembling beneath the leaves. Thin. Dirty. Abandoned.

They were only a few weeks old—two gingers and a tabby—huddled together, clinging to each other to survive the night. There was no mother. Nothing. Just them. Fragile. Alone. Silent.

I wanted to pick them up, to place them gently in a box. But my dog—this big, often clumsy giant—lay down on the ground instead, resting his muzzle beside them. He didn’t growl. He didn’t fidget. He simply lay there, as if he understood that they needed warmth, calm, protection.

That day, I didn’t make a decision.

He made it for me.

Since then, they never leave his side. They sleep curled against him, hide between his legs, climb onto his back like a soft, living mountain. He doesn’t mind. He watches over them. He lets them nibble his ears, play with his tail, fall asleep on his chest.

Sometimes I watch him—the old one, the survivor of a hard past. This dog I took in when no one else wanted him, when people said he was “too big,” “too old,” “too difficult.” And now, I see him transformed—into a guardian, a guide, a gentle giant of a father to a tiny litter he saved himself.

They’re not his puppies. They’re not even the same species. And yet, he loves them as if they were his own. As if, in those three little lost beings, he recognized a piece of himself.

Today, they are a family.

A strange, living puzzle—unlikely, but perfect. A reminder that love has no shape, no breed, no logic. It just needs a heart big enough to hold it.

Happy Gotcha Day to this boy whom I love beyond measure. We know his birthday, but why not celebrate again? These words from ILO's song, 'I'm Home Again,' surely fit how I feel about this joyful, snuggly boy. I'm grateful to be your person, Keaton. ❤

You gave me light when I was blind
You bring peace into my heart
You drove me back to my believes
And today I'm home again

The Original Rocket Recall Rule #10—Maintain it after you train it. Regardless of the skill you've taught your dog, practicing that skill is essential to maintaining its strength. Keaton is usually glued to my side, and this morning, on our way back from a sniffy walk in the woods, when I released him to "go play," he bee-lined for the house to see Brad. What a great chance for me to practice my own dog's turn-on-a-dime, speedy recall. To see his joy in returning to me...well, it's priceless, really. No matter where you are in your journey of training your dog, it's the repetition of that skill and the reinforcement of it that leads you to success. Happy Training!

"normalize ignoring more dogs in public. Let them carry on with their handler and admire them from a far. It would do a world of good, trust me."

Why yes my dog would LOVE to say hi, but I’m still going to say “no thank you” and move on. Why?

1. Because I want my dog to learn that every time we see people it doesn’t mean it’s a party for him. I’d like him to continue his focus on us together as a team and not create conditioned excitement and expectation every time we are approached by someone.

2. Because I don’t know what saying hi means to you. Will you politely touch him? Will you allow him space to move away if he wants? Will you put your face too close to his? I don’t want him to have a negative experience so I’m going to avoid that by continuing our walk.

3. Because maybe I feel overwhelmed or stressed in public places and conversations with strangers may make me uncomfortable, so even though you’d like to talk and meet my dog, I’m protecting myself too.

4. Because we’re in a rush and have to get something done quickly.

5. Because I said no. Even social, sweet, friendly dogs and their handlers have every right to say “no” to a request to meet and be touched by people. This shouldn’t just apply to reactive, worried or bubble space dogs. Dogs are not public property, and saying “no thank you” to touching my dog shouldn’t be regarded as rude or unkind, any more than if a stranger asked to hold my baby.

Please normalize hearing “no” OR even better, normalize ignoring more dogs in public. Let them carry on with their handler and admire them from a far. It would do a world of good for dogs and humans everywhere, trust me.

🛑 NO! FIDO! STOP! 🛑
Do you find yourself trying so hard to stop your dog from doing XYZ, and well it's not working as well as you had hoped?

Behavior changes more quickly and reliably, while having lasting results, when you find ways to say "yes" more than you say "no".

✅ Dog training is hugely successful when you find way to teach your dog alternate behaviors to replace the bad ones instead of trying over and over to stop or punish the bad behavior.

EXAMPLES

1️⃣ If you have a dog jumps on guests instead of punishing the dog for jumping a better solution is to train your dog to do a behavior instead of jumping. So, training Fido to lie on a mat when the doorbell rings and guests enter would eliminate his need or ability to jump on the entering guests.

2️⃣ If you have a dog that pulls on the leash instead of jerking the leash and trying to stop the pulling, give treats and rewards when Fluffy walks nicely next to you. Train her that walking on a loose leash next to you yields treats, and then sniffs to the grass to follow then she'll look forward to walks and learn that walking on a loose leash brings on good things. She'll choose that behavior every time the more she's trained to understand this.

3️⃣ If you have a dog that barks out of the window instead of punishing him for barking, teach him to settle on a mat away from the window and/or that when he sees things outside good things happen and there is no need to bark frantically.

⁉️ Are you finding ways to tell your dog yes instead of no? If not, you should start.

Every dog trainer in the world has been asked what to do when a dog doesn’t respond properly, though the wording of the query takes many forms: What should I do when my dog refuses to do what I tell her to do? My dog is so stubborn—how do I get her to do what I ask? What’s the best way to deal...
