We are beyond excited to share that our Asian elephant herd is expanding! 🐘 Billy, a 40-year-old bull, and 59-year-old female Tina, will relocate later this year from Los Angeles Zoo to The Mary K. and John T. Oxley Family Elephant Experience and Elephant Preserve. We have dedicated 70 years to providing excellent care for Asian elephants at all stages of life, and we are honored to receive Billy and Tina into our existing herd, which includes males Sneezy and Hank and females Sooky, Booper and Connie.

This decision is truly a testament to our expertise with this species, including elephant introductions, managing multiple bulls and individualized care plans. Collaborating with our accrediting body, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, this decision is an example of AZA-accredited zoos working together in the best interest of individual elephants.

We are proud to welcome these two to Tulsa soon. Make sure to follow our social channels for the most recent updates.

🚧 William S. Smith African Wilds Construction Update 🚧
We’re excited to share that our new guest pathway to Africa is now open! This means you can once again visit giraffes and rhinos. Our Giraffe Feeding Experience is also being offered again during its normal hours.

With this new pathway open, only two species remain off exhibit: meerkats and southern ground hornbills. We’ll be posting a POV walkthrough of the new construction pathway soon, so you’ll know exactly what to expect when you visit.

🚧 Please note: For the next couple of weeks, the pathway from Aldabra tortoises to Macaw Landing Grille will be temporarily closed. During this time, to reach areas like the Helmerich Playground and Zoorassic World: Frozen in Time, guests must follow the west route past the Robert J. LaFortune WildLIFE Trek and the Children’s Zoo pictured in the accompanying map. Once construction crews finish work in this area, guests will once again be able to reach these areas from both directions.

Thank you for your patience and support as we continue to build a bigger, better Tulsa Zoo!

As part of a preventative healthcare program, our grizzly bears receive routine veterinary exams to ensure they’re in good health. 🐻 During Rainy’s recent check-up, our veterinary and large carnivore teams worked together to draw blood samples, trim Rainy’s claws, measure her weight, clean her ears and check her eyes and overall body condition. Rainy weighed in at 215 kg, which is about 474 pounds! Routine wellness exams like this allow us to closely monitor our animals and provide the high-quality care they deserve.

Thanks to the Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation, we have the official name for our male siamang infant: Lagu (pronounced Lah-goo)! 💚

“Lagu” means song in Malay—a perfect fit for a species known for its powerful, coordinated vocalizations. Siamang songs aren’t just impressive to hear—they play a key role in how bonded pairs, like Lagu’s parents, Boomerang and Jambi, strengthen their connection.

Lagu lives in the Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation Siamang Habitat in Lost Kingdom with mom, dad and big brother, Pandai. As he grows, we can’t wait to hear him find his own voice in the family chorus! 🎶

🦣 Then vs. Now: Mastodon, Mammoth & Hank! 🐘

At Zoorassic World: Frozen in Time, you’ll meet two prehistoric giants—the mastodon and the woolly mammoth. Mastodons were shorter and stockier with cone-shaped teeth made for chewing leaves and twigs. Woolly mammoths, on the other hand, had long, curved tusks and flat, ridged teeth perfect for grazing on grasses. Both are distant relatives of Hank, our Asian elephant— the largest resident at Tulsa Zoo!

While mastodons and mammoths vanished thousands of years ago, elephants like Hank are still with us today—and still in need of our protection.

Come explore the chilling past and the amazing present at Zoorassic World: Frozen in Time, now open at Tulsa Zoo! Learn more: https://tulsazoo.org/roar

We’re continuing to share thoughts from Zuri’s care team as we eagerly await her first baby’s arrival! 🐵💖

Keeper Mo says:
“When we enter this field of zookeeping, we don't fully understand the scope of emotion we’ll feel day to day. Some days are typical—feeding, training, cleaning—but others are core memory days. From the moment Zuri arrived from LA, we knew she was here with the recommendation to breed. After taking her off contraception, we tracked her cycles. Then, one month, a positive pregnancy test brought huge excitement.
Zuri’s a first-time mom, so there’s risk—but she came from a large, social group and had a great mom herself. Now, as we finalize preparations and she participates in weekly ultrasounds, it’s both a learning and humbling experience to witness this young female get ready to give birth to her first infant.”

Zoological Manager Nancee shares:
“This is such an exciting time for the Primate department here at the Tulsa Zoo. We’ve baby-proofed her space, adjusted her diet and worked with Zuri in training sessions to observe her growing infant. She’s done great presenting her belly for ultrasounds—we’ve seen a heartbeat, ribs, spine, an arm, leg and head!
She seems to enjoy the extra snacks and attention, and we can’t wait to welcome this new baby and share the joy with our guests.”

Follow along for more Zuri updates soon!

As we count down to the arrival of our newest chimpanzee troop member, Zuri’s care team is sharing what it’s been like to support her through this incredible journey. 💛🐵

Keeper Sarah shares:
“Zuri is the first pregnant chimp I have worked with. Watching her go through this amazing journey has been incredible. I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher for my first time seeing this. Zuri is a sweet chimp, who is eager to participate in any activity the keepers suggest. She has willingly and excitedly participated in training for ultrasounds, presentation of her abdomen and chest and anything else we have asked to help monitor her pregnancy.
She is also socially savvy within the troop. From the day she arrived at Tulsa Zoo, she has masterfully navigated the troop dynamics to become one of the males' favored females. She has been a playmate and a rock for Enloe as he’s navigated his changing role. I am looking forward to watching her place and responsibilities in the troop expand. Given her intelligence, joy and eagerness, I can’t wait to see her as a mother—and what traits she passes on to her little one.”

Keeper Riley adds:
“Zuri’s pregnancy has been full of exciting moments! A few of my favorites: getting teary-eyed seeing the positive pregnancy test, the joy of seeing the heartbeat on the ultrasound for the first time and noticing her baby bump! This journey has given us so many special moments with Zuri—and we’ve loved hand-feeding her extra produce and enjoying her incredible personality along the way.”

Stay tuned tomorrow for more reflections from the team!

We’re thrilled to announce the final piece of our visionary Asian elephant habitat is now open! 🎉🐘

The Mary K. and John T. Oxley Family Elephant Experience marks the completion of a multi-year transformation to elevate care, conservation and guest connection with this incredible species. This newly renovated space reimagines our original elephant barn and interpretive center—first opened in 1995—into a modern hub where guests can engage with the world of Asian elephants like never before.

Here’s what’s new:
🐘 Renovated Indoor and outdoor guest viewing
🐘 Live video feeds of our elephants across 17 acres
🐘 More educational opportunities with our staff and docents
🐘 Family-friendly upgrades (hello, new restrooms!)

This exciting update joins the 36,650-square-foot Preserve Barn that opened in Spring 2024 and the newly added 10-acre Elephant Preserve. Together, these spaces make up one of the largest Asian elephant habitats in North America—allowing us to care for multi-generational herds and support evolving animal welfare standards.

Within one month of opening the Preserve Barn, we welcomed two new elephants from Columbus Zoo, growing our herd to five. These improvements ensure Tulsa Zoo can continue to provide world-class care and help protect this endangered species for generations to come.

Thank you to our incredible donors, The Mary K. and John T. Oxley Family, Vision Tulsa voters and our amazing community for making this possible!
