Did you know the longest snake species in the world lives right here at the zoo? 🐍

Our female reticulated python, housed in the WildLIFE Trek Forest building, recently weighed in at 120 pounds, making her the largest and heaviest snake in our care.

Want to learn more about her? Join us for reticulated python keeper chats every Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. and hear directly from the experts who care for her!

At Tulsa Zoo, we’ve spent over 70 years caring for Asian elephants through every stage of life. One of the areas we specialize in is geriatric care. With 5 of our 7 elephants considered geriatric, our team provides individualized care tailored to their unique needs. In this video, we’re sharing a look at the specialized support we provide for Tina, one of the newest and oldest members of our herd. 🐘

Here's part two of our Hyacinth Macaw Keeper Takeover! 🦜 In this video, Keeper Liz walks us through a training session with Ollie, one of our three Hyacinth macaws. Training not only provides mental stimulation but also helps our Bird team perform important health checkups.

You’ll also meet our other two Hyacinth macaws, Roxanne and Newman, a bonded pair who are part of the Species Survival Plan® (SSP) for their species. Through SSP participation, Tulsa Zoo helps support the long-term conservation and genetic diversity of this species.

Welcome to part one of our Hyacinth Macaw Keeper Takeover! 🦜 In this video, Supervisor Taylor introduces you to Ollie, one of our three Hyacinth macaws here at the Tulsa Zoo. Taylor walks us through his care routine and explains how our Bird team uses positive reinforcement training to encourage important medical behaviors that keep Ollie healthy and engaged.

Hyacinth macaws are the largest parrots in the world, and each one in our care plays a role as an ambassador for their wild counterparts. Stay tuned tomorrow for part two!

Billy and Tina have officially completed their quarantine period and, this week, they had the chance to explore the main elephant yard at the preserve barn for the very first time! 🐘

Guests can see the barn’s main yard and herd room from the viewing deck, so we invite you to come and see them! However, please keep in mind that Billy and Tina, along with the rest of our herd, may have access to different areas throughout our elephant habitat. Depending on their daily schedule and care routine, they may be in areas less visible to guests as we rotate the elephants through their spaces.

We can’t wait to share more updates as Billy and Tina continue to explore different areas of their habitat and adjust to their new home!

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to sip to save species at Conservation on Tap! 🍻🐦

With your support, we raised over $30,000 for our conservation partner, the Cikananga Conservation Breeding Centre, which works to protect critically endangered songbirds in Indonesia.

Your impact reaches far beyond the zoo, and we hope you had an amazing time. 🌍

As Pollinator Week wraps up, we’re reminding everyone that monarch conservation starts with all of us. 🦋

Every year, monarchs travel thousands of miles during one of the most impressive migrations on Earth, yet they face major threats from habitat loss and climate change. You can track their migration in real time thanks to citizen scientist data at maps.journeynorth.org.

Tulsa Zoo is proud to be a leader in monarch conservation, and we want you to join us! What can YOU do to help monarchs?
🌿 Plant native milkweed and nectar plants
🌿 Avoid pesticides in your yard
🌿 Create a certified Monarch Waystation
🌿 Get involved in tagging or citizen science efforts

Learn more at okiesformonarchs.org and fws.gov/initiative/pollinators/save-monarch

Together, we can make a difference for monarchs, for pollinators and for our planet. 💚

We have MORE big news! 🐢 We’re excited to share the successful hatching of a Roti Island snake-necked turtle, a species considered functionally extinct in the wild. This hatchling is part of a collaborative repatriation program with other AZA-accredited facilities, working toward reintroducing the species to its native range in Indonesia. The turtle will stay behind the scenes for the next few years before its release and will not be on exhibit to ensure proper care and protection. This conservation milestone is a proud moment for our Reptile team and a hopeful step for the future of this species!

We’ve got some BIG news to shell-ebrate! 🐢 Seven Aldabra tortoise eggs recently hatched, and we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at their incredible journey from incubated eggs to tiny hatchlings! Our Reptiles team monitored each egg closely throughout incubation, regularly candling, weighing and maintaining a consistent humidity and temperature to give them the best chance at success. Tulsa Zoo has been a top producer of Aldabra hatchlings among AZA-accredited institutions for years, and we’re so excited about these new additions. These little ones will remain behind the scenes for now as they grow, but we’ll be sharing updates as they get bigger and bolder!
