BRING THEM IN: Ideally, all pets should be indoors, but if they must stay outside, ensure they have adequate protection against the cold. Dogs with thin fur and bare bellies are prone to shivering and should be brought inside or given insulated shelter. Puppies, older dogs, and those that are sick or fragile are particularly susceptible to the cold and require additional care.
PROVIDE SHELTER: Ensure your dog has access to a well-insulated doghouse, garage, or shed when temperatures dip below freezing. Position the doghouse entrance away from the wind, snow, and rain. Dogs that are used to indoor living or warmer climates should not be left outside in freezing conditions. Make sure the shelter is easily accessible, as you may not be home when the temperature drops.
INSULATE SHELTER: While a plastic or wooden doghouse can shield them from the wind, it won’t keep them warm. Insulate any outdoor shelter with straw bedding—avoid hay. The straw should be packed tightly along the sides and back, allowing your dog to burrow in for warmth. Bales of straw typically cost around $10 or less at local feed stores and can fill 3-4 doghouses. NEVER use blankets or cloth for insulation, as they trap moisture and can make your pet colder.
WATER: It’s vital for outdoor pets to have access to fresh, unfrozen water at all times. Regularly check their water supply, especially during freezing temperatures. Heated water bowls are available at pet supply or feed stores to help prevent freezing.
