Please read!! In preparation for today’s 4th of July Holiday ...........
Be mindful of the effects of fireworks and gunshots have on your pets.

1. Make sure your pet is inside if possible
2. Make sure your pets are properly collared and tagged and microchipped and that your info is updated
3. Have your pets medication ready and given ahead of the festivities (check your local times and locations for fireworks)
4. Have a loud fan, tv, radio and AC unit on to help drown out the noise
5. Make sure your yard is secure, gates are closed and locked and fence lines are checked.
6. Feed meals ahead of time so your pet has time to go out and potty before the the loud noises start and they are afraid to go out later.
7. Be home with them if possible. The 4th of July is the most dangerous holiday for our pets. Please keep in mind how dangerous fireworks and gunshots are to our pets and our desert and what a fire hazard they are.

Thanks to all of our Nunn Better clients who made proper pet sitting arrangements and house sitting for their furry loved ones.

Warmer weather is on is way, take care to avoid Heat Stroke.

Hyperthermia, commonly called heat stroke, is a life-threatening condition that can affect dogs in the heat of the Tucson summer. The most common cause of heat stroke is being locked in a parked car, but can also occur from spending the day outdoors with no water or simply taking a walk during the heat of the day. Heat stroke will occur when the temperature around the pet is so hot that the normal system of panting to cool off cannot work.

Those dogs at greatest risk are elderly patients, dogs who have heart or lung problems, and brachycephalic breeds. Brachycephalic breeds are the ones with "pushed in faces" like English Bull Dogs and Pugs. To lower the risk of heat stroke, all pets should have constant access to water and shade during hot weather. Never take dogs for long walks or runs during the heat of the day.

Signs of overheating include excessive panting and salivation, weakness or inability to walk, rapid heart rate, vomiting, and seizures. If you recognize any of these signs in your dog, seek veterinary care immediately. Do not immerse your dog in water as this can drop the body temperature too fast and send your dog into shock. If the dog reaches the point where there is vomiting or seizures, permanent damage to internal organs, even death, may occur.
