Sharing means caring. If someone doesn’t eat all their food, everyone else shares it. Our super star summer intern Vega makes sure that everyone shares nicely and fairly.

Why not come by to volunteer at Old Souls tomorrow (Saturday) 6-9am so you too can enjoy being surrounded by the Old Souls pack?! Register to become a volunteer at www.oldsouls.org/volunteer.

Recently, a dog that was in the shelter in Texas where I was the Director left for the Bridge. His name was Dayton. When I left Texas, he had been in the shelter for over a year. An amazing rescue called BARK was able to eventually pull him from that shelter, but he spent a total of four years in the shelter/rescue system before Jenny Luper, my right hand person at the shelter, was able to take him into her home. Dayton had some issues that were worsened significantly with every day behind bars. But the people who loved him and could see who he really was worked and worked and worked to give him a good life. We went to the ends of the earth promoting him for adoption, getting him training, and loving him despite, and maybe bc of, his issues. We never gave up on him no matter how many times his life was put on the line for potential euthanasia. Jenny and Raylan were the highlights of his life, giving him the only hope he had for a normal life. Raylan grew up with Dayton. How utterly amazing for a child to spend 5 years of her life seeing her mom, her grandma, shelter and rescue staff, and volunteers rally behind this dog to try to give him the life he deserved. She learned hope, perseverence, sadness, and love all through the experience of this one dog. Raylan was playing with her toys one day and when Jenny asked her what she was doing, she said she was playing Dr Paula at the shelter, pretending to be a shelter director. That was so beautiful that I nearly cried. But what is even more beautiful is that her mom has become an absolute rock star in sheltering and animal welfare, always fighting for what is right for animals. That is exactly what she did for Dayton. I can’t imagine a better tole model for Raylan than her own mom Jenny and all the incredible people that she surrounds herself with. I love every person who tried to make a difference for Dayton, especially Jenny. She never gave up on him. Dayton will be in our hearts forever. Click this link to see Jenny’s post.

Ndogo is the newest member of the Old Souls pack! He arrived last night from Pima Animal Care Center, and he couldn’t resist kissing Kelly to celebrate his Freedom Ride home to us! Thanks to a wonderful PACC Volunteer who alerted us that this big old boy was amazing and sweet but deteriorating in the shelter, we were able to pull him from the shelter before he made it to the euthanasia list. That volunteer’s donation to support his care is going to help so much to make sure his last chapter of life here at Old Souls is the best chapter!

Ndogo is Swahili for Tiny, a perfect name for a big giant boy. When he arrived here at Old Souls, he didn’t waste any time fitting right in. It feels like he has always been here. I mean, just look at the pic of him and our superstar summer intern Vega! He is perfect!

If you would like to meet Ndogo, consider volunteering at Old Souls. Sign up at www.oldsouls.org/volunteer.

Our Story

Old Souls Animal Rescue and Retirement Home is a 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue founded to give geriatric and hospice animals a dignified end of life surrounded by love.

It's hard to imagine, but many animals are abandoned in their old age because they require more intensive care and are no longer playful and youthful. At Old Souls Animal Rescue and Retirement Home, we seek out these forgotten geriatric and special needs animals, particularly those who are within weeks or months of going to the Rainbow Bridge. We feel that after all they have been through, after all the loyalty they have shown their owners despite how they may have been treated, they deserve a dignified end of life in which they feel loved, comforted, and special. When animals come to Old Souls, they spend their time resting on orthopedic beds, eating delicious healthy food (sometimes homemade!), taking just enough medicine to keep them comfortable, and sharing their lives with other old dogs, cats, tortoises, pigs, horses, rabbits, and even chickens. They truly become part of a loving family, many times for the first time in their lives. Thanks to our specially made doggy doors that leads to grassy backyard areas, dogs, cats, and pigs of all sizes can let themselves in and out whenever they choose without navigating steps or having to push on a door. They also have a toy box full of stuffed animals, balls, and chew toys (for those who still have teeth!). We spend quality time with every individual animal every day so for at least a little while each day, each animal feels like they are our only animal.

Foster homes are critical for our rescue, especially forever foster homes - the more fosters we have, the more animals we can rescue. Sometimes when animals come to us, they live for only a few days, but other times, they surprise us and live well beyond their expected years. There are no cages at our rescue - everyone has the run of the house (although there's not much running!). They lounge on the couch, sleep in our bed, and sun themselves in the yard whenever they like. While rescuing these animals always results in tears, we believe that no old animal should have to die alone and scared in a shelter or homeless on the streets, so we give them the dignified end of life they deserve ... and in return they give us endless happiness and incredible memories of their loyal loving spirits.

We are a volunteer-run 501c3 non-profit organization, and we run the rescue out of our home. Paula works full-time for the University of Arizona to keep a roof over the heads of our Old Souls, and to keep some human food on our table, and Isaac works 24 hours a day (literally most days) as our Director of Operations for no paycheck, and without vacations, holidays, and sometimes even without a thank you from anyone. He manages vet visits, volunteers, cleaning, feeding ... you name it! We have volunteers for a few hours each day, and we are incredibly grateful for their help!
