Crate training doesn’t start with a calm puppy - it builds one.

Here’s the exact progression I use with puppies who panic when the crate door closes:
1. Reward engagement with the crate
Treats for looking at it, walking toward it, or choosing to step inside.
2. Build positive associations inside the crate
I calmly lower her in, drop treats inside, and let her learn the crate predicts good things.
3. Desensitize the door movement
Open door → close door → treat → open again.
Short, easy repetitions so the door itself stops feeling stressful.
4. Add short duration with the door closed
A few calm seconds at a time while continuing to reward relaxed behavior.
5. Slowly introduce distance
Step away briefly, return, reward calm, then open the crate before panic starts.
6. Reinforce calm behavior only
If she cries, stands up, or rushes toward me, I pause. Calm behavior is what earns access and attention.
7. Use enrichment to help her settle
Stuffed Kong, licking, chewing, and relaxing activities help create positive rest time in the crate.
8. Build toward real relaxation
The goal isn’t for the puppy to “cry it out.” The goal is a puppy who genuinely feels safe enough to settle and fall asleep in the crate. 💤
