a Little bit of Guinness....

A missed shot at a bird changed the world forever.
Before it became the ultimate authority on jaw-dropping human achievements—from the tallest man to the fastest pizza-maker—the Guinness Book of World Records began with something far simpler: a gentleman's bruised ego and a question no one could answer.
November 1951. County Wexford, Ireland. Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of the Guinness Brewery, was out on a hunting expedition when he missed his shot at a golden plover. As the bird escaped into the Irish sky, Beaver turned to his companions and declared it must be the fastest game bird in Europe. His hunting party disagreed. The debate raged on, but when they returned home, not a single reference book could settle the argument.
That moment gnawed at Beaver. If he couldn't find the answer, how many other pub-goers across Britain and Ireland were having the exact same frustrating debates every single night? The answer, he realized, was thousands.
In 1954, Beaver commissioned twin brothers Norris and Ross McWhirter—fact-finding journalists from London—to create the definitive answer book. For three months, they worked 90-hour weeks, writing to experts from astrophysicists to mycologists, gathering records on everything imaginable. On August 27, 1955, the first 198-page Guinness Book of Records was bound.
One thousand copies, with water-resistant covers (because pubs can get messy), were distributed free to Irish and British pubs. Guinness thought it would be a nice promotional giveaway. They had no idea what they'd created.
The books vanished from pub shelves overnight. Demand exploded. By Christmas, 50,000 commercial copies were printed and the book became a bestseller. The following year, it launched in America and sold 70,000 copies. Today, it's sold over 150 million copies in 100 countries and 40 languages.
What started as one man's wounded pride after missing a bird has become the global authority on human achievement—a testament to our endless curiosity and our age-old need to know: "Who's right?"
The next time you see someone break a world record, remember—it all started because a businessman couldn't shoot straight.
