How often does your horse need a massage? That depends.

If your horse has a dull coat, is moving stiff and slow, muscles appear tight, body looks restricted, your horse will benefit from a massage.

Depending on how long the horse has gone without any restriction release, it may take 2 or 3 sessions to fully get the muscles released. Once released, the massage sessions can be spread out to every month or every two months.

Owners want to look at their horse’s massage schedule with the mindset of what their horse needs. Are you in a show season, going on long trail rides, trailering, an increased training schedule, or your horse just needs a massage.

Massage is very good for a horse and it feels good too!

Trigger Points: Toxin buildup in the muscle belly, usually caused by tension in the muscle. Tension occurs when the horse is overworked, under stress, or even boredom. They feel like a knot or a band of knots and some can be painful. These trigger points need to be massaged out so the muscle can get circulation and oxygen again and get the horse feeling better!

Equine Massage is a non-invasive therapy practice used on horses that use the hands to influence muscles. A horse’s optimal movement can be compromised due to injury, incorrect saddle fit, pain and inflammation, repetitive movements, strenuous exercise, arthritis, or emotional stress, and all this will affect the soft tissue. As this occurs, the horse may exert behaviors such as aggression, dominance, unwilling to move, refusal, or simply just feeling off. The muscles and the fascia are restricted. Without outside manipulation, this restriction will not go away on its own.

Equine Massage and Bodywork - massage, fascia release, stretching, taping, blading, pemf, etc…. Bodyworkers are everywhere now and each have their own style, method, and specialty. People are becoming certified each year by the hundreds and we now have MANY to choose from! Even Owners have the information to do their own massage or even get certified to do their own horses!! My message today is “Work On Your Horses!” Whether you as the owner want to save the money and do it yourself, OR you break down and pay the cost and hire a bodyworker, Just Work On Your Horses. The horses NEED it! It is good and I mean good for them!! If you think riding and spraying them down then putting them away day after day after day will be ok, I strongly suggest to reconsider! There really is no excuses anymore with all that is offered out there. Yes a certified bodyworker will have much more training, knowledge, and experience, but if it comes down to: ‘it’s too expensive’, then do it yourself, ‘I didn’t like the bodyworker I had’, look for another one (there are MANY), ‘my horse doesn’t need it’, really??

Work On Your Horses! No excuses! They do to much for us and they are amazing!

Advocate for the horse,
Lori

Semitendinosus
This is the longest muscle of the hamstrings and is located between the Biceps Femoris and Semimembranosus muscles.

This muscle extends the hip,
flexes stifle and hock and assists with the rotation in the legs. Very important for hind-end movement and overall performance.

Equine Massage will help release muscle and fascia restriction and get circulation moving.

Your horse will Thank You!

Biceps Femoris - this is a large muscle located in the hind-end, part of the hamstring muscles. This muscle flexes the knee, extends the hip and hock, assists in hindlimb abduction and overall hindlimb movement.

If overworked and not enough recovery time, this muscle can become strained which may affect other muscles in the body. The horse’s gaits could be off, inflammation and swelling could occur, and of course the horse is just not feeling good.

👉 Keep in mind that within your conditioning program, REST is a key factor for muscle recovery. Schedule light (and fun) workouts in between the intensive workouts or just a day off. Muscles worked must have the time to recover.

☀️ An Equine Massage will also GREATLY help to release muscle tension and restriction, any trigger points or spasms, fascia release and just gives the horse an overall good feeling and better movement!

So consider a massage for your horse! It will help to recover muscles but will help your horse feel better!!
