FIV is not a death sentence and FIV+ cats can safely live with FIV-. Read this shared post to learn more!
Alright, we are going to run this one back because we are still getting a lot of potential adopters who misunderstand what an FIV diagnosis means for a cat.
FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, and the second people see those three letters, they panic. Now I do get it. It sounds scary, but most of the time, it is not what people think it is.
First, I'll go over how it spreads.
FIV is mainly transmitted through deep bite wounds. This cannot be spread by sharing food bowls, using the same litter box, or casual play. It is not something your cat is just going to “catch” from being around an FIV+ cat in a normal home environment.
So yes, FIV+ cats CAN live with FIV- cats safely in the right home, and we see it all the time.
Now let’s talk about what it actually means for the cat.
Most FIV+ cats live long, normal lives. I am talking full lifespan, normal. The “immunodeficiency” part just means their immune system can be a little weaker, so if they do get sick, it might hit them a bit harder. That’s it, that is all it is. Now I will say stress can induce a short sickness, and that goes back to the immunodeficiency part of FIV. Imagine someone paying you no mind because you cannot eat gluten... (I say that because I can't eat it, lmao, so I am sorry if that applies to you as well.)
They are NOT constantly sick.
They are NOT fragile little glass cats.
They ARE normal, goofy, loving, and chaotic cats.
What they do need is pretty simple.
Regular vet care
An indoor life that allows them to stay safe and healthy
A family that will actually pay attention if something seems off
That is literally it. There is also no risk to humans, as this is a CAT-SPECIFIC virus.
The hardest part of FIV isn't the virus itself; it is people not being able to see past the label.
People see “FIV+” and scroll right past them. Meanwhile, these cats sit in rescue for months, sometimes years, when they could have been in a home this whole time.
And honestly, a lot of our FIV cats? They are some of the sweetest, most laid-back cats we have. They just want a couch, a window, and someone to love them.
