As the AAEP celebrates , we are excited to spotlight future horse doctor Silke Hoffmann. She is a 2024 DVM candidate at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and serves as the AAEP student chapter co-president at Davis.

The daughter of immigrants—her mom is from Taiwan and her dad is from Germany— Silke immersed herself in the equine world during her undergrad years at California Polytechnic University, Pomona. She rode with her Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association team and worked as a technician for an ambulatory equine practice, which she called a fundamental experience that boosted her confidence to pursue an equine path in veterinary school.

As Silke nears the attainment of her dream of becoming a horse doctor, she shares important advice with students who don’t fit the traditional profile of an equine veterinarian or feel they lack horse experience. “Try it! The equine profession is a wonderful one filled with many possibilities.”

Silke also encourages veteran practitioners to help affect positive change by welcoming and mentoring aspiring horse doctors from non-traditional backgrounds. “Seeing practitioners of different backgrounds is instrumental to inspiring young people of color to join the profession. The equine field is currently in a time of major change, and I am excited for the infinite possibilities.”

Thank you for shining your bright light in the world of equine medicine, Silke!

The USDA has released their decision regarding the proposed changes to the Horse Protection Act. The language in the Act has been changed to apply to Tennessee Walking Horses and Racking Horses.

Beginning 30 days after the publication of the final rule, all action devices, except for certain boots, are prohibited on any Tennessee Walking Horse or racking horse at any horse show, exhibition, sale, or auction. All pads and wedges are prohibited on any Tennessee Walking Horse or racking horse at any horse show, exhibition, sale, or auction on or after January 1, 2018, unless such horse has been prescribed and is receiving therapeutic, veterinary treatment using pads or wedges. This delayed implementation allows ample time to both gradually reduce the size of pads to minimize any potential physiological stress to the horses and prepare horses to compete in other classes.

This final rule will be published in the Federal Register in the coming days.
