A longer letter for your elected officials. All you have to do is fill in the blanks and add what you want to add to it! But let's move. I have done the leg work for us. Send this to your elected officials for whatever county you live in! Tell them you will be watching how this proceeds and then watch!!! Heck send it to the Governor as well, I did.
Subject: Please Support Stronger Dog-Protection Laws in Alabama
Dear [Governor/Representative/Senator ______],
I am writing to urge you to take action to strengthen Alabama’s laws protecting dogs from abuse, neglect, and unethical breeding practices.
Florida has recently advanced a comprehensive proposal to eliminate abusive puppy mills, license breeders, improve reporting mechanisms and require pet stores to support local shelter adoptions. Alabama needs similar protections. Our shelters are overwhelmed, rescues are operating at capacity, and too many animals suffer because our laws have not kept pace.
I respectfully request your support for legislation that would:
License and oversee dog breeders to prevent abusive, high-volume puppy mills.
Establish a statewide hotline for reporting breeder abuse and neglect.
Require pet stores to prioritize adoption space for local shelters.
Strengthen penalties for animal cruelty, abandonment, and abuse in front of minors.
Create a statewide animal-abuse offender database to prevent repeat offenders from adopting.
These are common-sense, bipartisan measures that protect animals, support shelters and law enforcement, and reflect the values of Alabama communities.
Please make this a priority. Our state can and should do better when it comes to protecting animals from harm.
