February 1st is National Serpent day (I can’t believe I forgot about it again).

Snakes are an integral part of the ecosystem. Not only will Sneaky Snakes drink all of your root beer, they also function as a good food source for many animals. Snakes act as effective pest control (such as rodents).

If you have any snake questions or would like to meet a couple, feel free to ask! (See Tom Hall “Sneaky Snake” for humor).

Here are a few examples of the slithery fellas you can find around Ohio (see photo for species descriptions):

The Queen snake is one of many snakes found in Ohio. Queen snakes are listed as a species of concern, which emphasizes the need to conserve the species. They are most commonly encountered around water sources. The Queen snake almost exclusively feeds on crawfish after a molt. During this time, the crawfish has very soft skin which makes an easy prey item. Queen snakes are unlikely to bite and are generally quite docile when encountered. They are one of many beneficial species we have.

In Ohio we have two species of racers, the blue racer(Coluber constrictor foxi) and the black racer(Coluber constrictor constrictor). The blue racer tends to be on the western half of the state and the black racer in the eastern. In the wild, racers will primarily feed on lizards and smaller mammals. They are a harmless, nonvenomous species capable of moving 8-10 miles per hour. They tend to be a nervous and defensive species of snake when encountered in the wild and as a captive.

Common Northern water Snake (Nerodia sipedon).

A common snake found throughout eastern and central North America, various subspecies included. Water snakes are harmless to humans, although they are more than willing to bite and musk. Water snakes are ovoviviparous, meaning the female parent carries the eggs and the offspring come out as live snakes. Their primary diet includes fish, worms, and small mammals.

This young water snake is found along a large large in Champaign County, Ohio.
