FAMILY DOG FIRST. GUN DOG SECOND.

When you get a dog, it is first and foremost a family member. Your kids love to play with them and cuddle them. Your wife gets mad about the muddy paw prints in the house, but secretly she’s sneaking them chunks of chicken while she’s making dinner.

We get it.

They are not a tool. They are your companion. They are your hunting buddy—hopefully with years and years of stories that start with, “remember that season when…”

That is what our training is tailored to. We not only want you to bring home the hunting dog of your dreams, but also a dog that is obedient so your family can enjoy them just as much as you do while you’re sitting in the duck blind.

A family dog sits on their bed in the family room while your kids roll around and play. A gun dog sits in the cover and is steady until released. Most people don’t realize this, but your dog can’t see that orange bumper the way you think they can. Dogs don’t see color like we do—they’re essentially red-green colorblind. That means orange blends right into grass and dirt. To us it looks bright and obvious… to them, it can be surprisingly hard to pick out.

So when you’re throwing an orange bumper for a young dog, especially a puppy that’s just learning, you’re not actually helping them learn how to mark a retrieve with their eyes. Instead, they end up relying on scent, wandering around, or just getting lucky. Then people start to think their dog “doesn’t like retrieving” or “just isn’t getting it,” when in reality, the dog was never set up to succeed in the first place.

Early on, retrieving should be visual. You want the dog to clearly see the object in the air, track it all the way down, and confidently go straight to where it landed. That’s how you build understanding and confidence. This is why we use white bumpers in the beginning—colors dogs can actually see and learn from.

It might seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference in how a dog develops. When the foundation is clear, everything that comes later is easier. When it’s not, you end up fixing problems that never needed to exist.

What a Finished Gun Dog Looks Like

This is what ‘finished’ actually means.

A finished gun dog doesn’t just retrieve.

They:
- Sit steady at the line
- Mark and remember multiple birds
- Take direction on blinds
- Deliver clean to hand
- Stay composed under pressure

That level doesn’t happen by accident.

It’s built through repetition, structure, and high standards.

This is a blind retrieve, meaning the dog never saw where the bumper was placed.

Everything you’re seeing here is based on communication between the handler and the dog. When the dog is stopped on the whistle and given a cast, they’re expected to take that direction and stay on that line until told otherwise.

Work like this is where a dog’s training really shows. It requires focus, control, and a clear understanding of how to respond under pressure without defaulting to hunting on their own.

It’s a process to get to this point. This level of consistency comes from building the right foundation and reinforcing it over time.

2024 Hunt Test season.
Super overdue post as I have deleted my social media apps this year.
2024 was a big year with building and moving into the new kennel facility. Lots of very very long days! A full year working full time with my amazing beautiful wife! I do not deserve her! She works her butt off!
Super excited for 2025!

Master
Sable went 6-8 and gained her MH title! Sable finished her Hunt test career 14-16 in hunt test at 3 years old!!

Senior
Rex went 5-5 he is now 9-9
Gracie went 4-4 onto masters!
Lillie went 4-8 and ran really good with her owner Shellie Davey running her first senior tests they ran great together!

Juniors
Hippie was a Rockstar 4-4
Pepper was a blast to watch 4-4
Oakley went 5-6
Theo went 4-6
Lace had a slow start and then ended 4-5
