Thank you for visiting the SPCA of Hancock County! Founded in 1911, the SPCA of Hancock County, Maine, is a life-saving organization committed to providing shelter and care for abandoned, stray and surrendered animals. Since opening the doors of our expanded facility in Trenton in October 2010, our organization has found homes for thousands of dogs and cats. We are also focused on community outrea

ch and education on proper and humane animal care. Due to the pandemic and concern for the safety of our staff and volunteers, all visits to the shelter are by appointment only. Please contact us to schedule an appointment to adopt, surrender a pet or stray animal, or with any other requests. We are accepting donations of pet food items, pet supplies, and anything you might find on our Amazon Wish List. These can be left at our front door or by the Volunteer Entrance. These entrances are regularly checked by staff for any dropped-off donations. If you're interested in volunteering with us, we would love to meet you. We have a great need for volunteers to help with general house-cleaning tasks around the shelter, help with animal care of dogs and/or cats, assist with groundskeeping and maintenance, perform public outreach at events, collecting bottles and redeemables from the vendors that donate to us, and so much more. If you would like to fundraise or donate to the SPCA, you can do so online or by contacting [email protected] to discuss ways to collaborate. Thank YOU for being the heroes to our animals. We could not do this life-saving work without the donations of time, money, and support that each of you give to us.

After sharing our exciting news about the puppies, we wanted to take a moment during Responsible Dog Ownership Month to talk about what comes next!

At just 8 weeks old, puppies are still very much babies. That means middle-of-the-night potty breaks, patient training, regular vet care, and gentle socialization. Chewed shoes, accidents on the floor, and boundless energy are all part of the journey. Puppyhood doesn’t end after a few months - it takes time, love, and consistency to help them grow into the companions we love so much.

We’re so excited for these little ones to find responsible, loving homes! 💙

🐾✨ PUPPY ANNOUNCEMENT! ✨🐾

We are so excited to share that 8 adorable puppies are officially ready for foster-to-adopt homes! 💙

At just 8 weeks old, these little ones are full of energy, snuggles, and puppy kisses. They appear to be some kind of pittie/lab mix, but since dad is a mystery, we can only say for sure that they’re 100% cute! Mom is not available, but is pictured for reference.

We know everyone loves meeting puppies (we do too!), but for the health and comfort of mom and her babies, visits are limited to approved adopters. They're squishy and wonderful, but they've had quite the journey. Thank you for understanding and supporting what’s best for them!

Each puppy has received all the vaccines they’re old enough for, and they’ve been treated for fleas, worms, and ticks.

Let’s talk about the proper “pet-tiquette” when bringing your dog out to Acadia. It all begins by following the B.A.R.K. ranger principles:

B is for Bag your pet’s waste. I mean, who wants to find dog p**p when you’re hiking? Remember: Leave No Trace!

A is for Always having your pet on a leash that’s 6 feet or less. Even the most well-trained pets can be unpredictable in a new environment.

R is for Respecting wildlife. Acadia is home to porcupines, bears, birds and more. Dogs can surprise these animals, leading to injuries. Always keep your pet a safe distance from wildlife.

K is for Know where to go—know your pet’s abilities and learn what trails your dog can join you in before heading out.

By following these principles, you can ensure that you and your four-legged friend have a safe and pleasant visit at Acadia!

Pet of the Week - Rigatoni! 🍝

Meet Rigatoni, a 3-month-old black kitten who is playful, curious, and full of love. He spends his days chasing toys, exploring every corner he can find, and then curling up for a cozy nap once he has worn himself out. Rigatoni has just the right mix of silly kitten energy and sweet snuggle time.

Young kittens like Rigatoni do best when they have a friend. Being adopted in pairs or joining a home with other cats helps them learn important social skills, keeps them entertained, and makes them feel safe and confident as they grow. Two kittens will play together, tire each other out, and give you twice the affection in return!

Rigatoni is ready to bring joy, laughter, and love to his forever family. Could that be with you? Start your adoption application today at https://www.spcahancockcounty.org/adopt/

It's Celebration Saturday!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Bangor Savings Bank Foundation, our intake dogs are getting a major kennel upgrade! 🐶💙

Their grant will fund the materials for a sturdy half-wall and permanent windows leading to the outside yards, replacing the flimsy plastic sheeting we have had to patch year after year. This lasting improvement means the dogs who first arrive at our shelter will have a more temperature-controlled and cozier space to settle in before moving up to our adoption floor to find their forever homes. 🐾

We are so grateful for this support. It is going to make a world of difference for the dogs in our care!

We’re so grateful to share that Roofing has chosen Pancake as their Pet of the Month!

Pancake is a big tomcat with even bigger cheeks and an even bigger heart, waiting to be discovered. He’s not the kind of cat who will rush over for attention. Instead, Pancake feels safest when he can quietly observe the world from his own cozy spot. What he needs most is patience, gentleness, and a calm home where he can take all the time he needs to feel safe and loved.

Thanks to Horch Roofing, Pancake’s adoption fee is fully sponsored. With kindness and understanding, Pancake has the chance to blossom into a deeply loyal companion. He just needs that special person willing to meet him where he is and walk with him on his journey.
