**HAPPY SHEDDING SEASON** ❄️💈 Our cats are blowing their coats like crazy right now.
We wanted to give some tips on how to avoid a knotty mess. ALWAYS start with a good combing, comb everywhere starting from the hind end up. The reason for doing this is because the dead fur falls to the hips as we comb downward. Don’t worry, it has happened to us several times and we made some of our cats have “edgy” fur cuts. 😂😂.
We use 3 main combs here. First, is a Chris Christensen Buttercomb, it has teeth that are finer on one side and coarse on the other. This is a whole body comb, start with the wider tooth side for your baby. The other two combs we use are also Chris Christensen combs. We have a small carding comb (teeth are long and short) this works great for set in knots. The last comb is the “Face and Feet” comb. This is designed just for that. They love the top of the head combed with it and you will be amazed at how much fur actually comes out. We will also finish combing the entire cat with either of the two smaller combs.
Bathing is a must every 6-8 weeks to avoid a knotty mess. If you haven’t tried to bathe and have one of our babies, we will be glad to teach you and share what products we use. We always start slowly, some baths are fast until we build up to the full experience. We want ALL POSITIVE experiences for the cat/kitten. We NEVER use conditioner. Maine C***s are greasy, some worse than others. We use several degreasers to break through the water barrier in the coat. Some groomers still have a difficult time doing this. Fortunately, we had major help from our very own Certified Feline Master Groomer and friend Paige. We love when she comes to visit and groom our cats for home or a cat show. Once you are more experienced, you will begin to notice how and where the water beads off the fur. Sometimes we are almost completely finished and see a small area that needs to be degreased again. As with bathing, this is one of the most important steps, dry thoroughly. The little waves or curls you see are from wet fur. I have a high velocity dryer a purple“Flying Pig.” It’s been overworked for over 7 years and still going strong. Always start slow and on the lowest speed along with the temperature on low. Once drying is complete, comb again and you will still see fur coming out. The more regularly you comb and bathe, the less problems you will have. Some even opt to shave down the bellies, under armpits and inner thighs. They really do feel good afterwards. This also helps us as owners to spot new marks, lumps, bumps, flaky or freckles on the skin. A great preventative as our babies age.
Same goes with nail trimmings. If you are one of ours and feed raw, you will see that your babies nails grow sharp every two weeks. Please trim at least the tips off so they don’t curl under into the paw pads. If your cat is shy about trimming, start by playing with the paws or trim while asleep. I have my own method on nail trimming and show everyone how my cats are used to my routine. Always be consistent, these cats are too smart and will teach us instead of the other way.
If you are one of our “furry family owners” always feel free to reach out for help. We just want the best for our babies. 💞💞😊 Photos below of our bathing results.
