Every Halloween, my teenage daughter would trade away all her candy except for one thing - Twix bars. She'd hoard them like precious treasure, sneaking one after school with her milk until they were all gone by Thanksgiving. One year, I surprised her by recreating that beloved candy bar flavor in cookie form, complete with the buttery shortbread base, gooey caramel middle, and smooth chocolate top. The look of pure joy on her face when she bit into that first homemade Twix cookie was absolutely priceless!
These Homemade Twix Cookies capture all the magic of the beloved candy bar - buttery shortbread base, rich caramel layer, and smooth chocolate coating that makes every bite absolutely irresistible! Based on the recipes I found, here's how to create these show-stopping treats.
Homemade Twix Cookies Recipe 🍪🍫
For the Shortbread Base:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
½ cup powdered sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Caramel Layer:
11 oz package caramel bits (like Kraft)
1 tablespoon heavy cream or milk
For the Chocolate Topping:
2 cups milk chocolate chips
2 teaspoons shortening (optional, for smoother melting)
Instructions:
Make shortbread: Preheat oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment. Cream butter and powdered sugar until fluffy. Mix in vanilla, then add flour and salt until dough forms.
Shape and bake: Roll dough to ½-inch thickness and cut into 2-3 inch rounds. Place on baking sheets and bake 12-13 minutes until edges are lightly golden. Cool completely on wire racks.
Prepare caramel: Microwave caramel bits and cream in 45-second intervals, stirring between, until smooth and melted.
Add caramel layer: Spoon warm caramel onto each cooled cookie, spreading to edges with back of spoon. Let sit 20 minutes until caramel firms up.
Top with chocolate: Melt chocolate chips (and shortening if using) in 30-second intervals until smooth. Spoon chocolate over caramel layer and spread evenly.
Set and serve: Let cookies sit until chocolate hardens completely, about 30 minutes, before serving.
Makes: 24 cookies | Prep + Bake Time: 1 hour | Storage: Keep in airtight container up to 5 days
These cookies deliver that perfect Twix experience - the buttery crunch, gooey caramel pull, and smooth chocolate finish that makes them even better than the original candy bar!
