Most people who chip their cat feel like the job is done.

It isn't -- and the gap between 'chipped' and 'findable' is where lost cats stay lost.

Here is the data from shelter intake logs:

Approximately 58% of microchipped cats brought into shelters as strays cannot be reunited with their owners through the chip -- not because the chip failed, but because the registration information is wrong.

The most common reasons:

The chip was registered to an email address that no longer exists. The phone number has changed. The owner moved and didn't update the address. The chip was registered at the vet's office and the owner never set up their own account in the national database.

A shelter scans the chip. The number comes up. They call. Disconnected. They email. Bounced. The cat waits.

The fix is simple and takes under five minutes:

Go to petmicrochiplookup.org and enter your cat's chip number. If the information that comes up is outdated -- update it today. If you don't know your cat's chip number -- your vet has it.

Five minutes. Do it this week.

Hi guys!
We have some news to share... Mr. Ryder is back looking for his forever home! He was such a good boy this weekend. He loved the other dogs in the home, he takes correction from other dogs SO well, he loves his people.... he just would like to eat the cats. SO we're now looking for a cat free home for our sweet boy! ❌🐱

There is absolutely no sadness or anger to this post. We got to learn so much about him and he got to have a super fun weekend out! It's important to keep spirits high, even though we want a forever home for our little man so bad. ❤

Ryder is 1.5 years old, about 50lbs, full of love to give, very food motivated, dog and kid friendly, loves adventures and meeting new people... just no cats! 🐾

SPLOOT HAS BEEN ADOPTED!🥳
A very sweet friend of ours came in to sponsor Sploot’s adoption fee today! He also left a complete “new kitty package” for his next owners ❣️

Sploot has been here since the day after Christmas and he’s soo ready for a home of his own. 🏡

He’s a beautiful large cat, with stunning markings, and cute little grinch feet. He’s a HOOT in the open cat room. He loves to play with toys and scratch posts (and literally anything else he deems fun to play with). He is an ornery guy so a cat playmate that matches his energy would be best!
