The Utah State Veterinarian, Dr. Amanda Price, has been monitoring the equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) outbreak reported in multiple states. While no neurologic cases have been reported in Utah, the State Veterinarian's office is still receiving trace information out of the affected states and contacting participants. Out of an abundance of caution, Dr. Price is recommending that all roping and barrel racing events in Utah, including this weekend's UHSRA Dixie Rodeo in Hurricane, be postponed until after December 2. For more information on EHV-1, please visit the UDAF Animal Health webpage at https://ag.utah.gov/animal-industry/animal-health-program/ or contact [email protected]

'Tis the season to be hairy (horse owners)!

If, however, you notice that your horse is clinging to their winter coat longer than they should, it might be time to give your veterinarian a call — especially if your horse is 15+.

A long haircoat that fails to shed according to normal seasonal patterns is the most classic sign of Equine Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), also known as Cushing’s disease. This disorder of the pituitary gland results in hormonal imbalances and is one of the most common diseases of middle-aged and geriatric horses.

Early diagnosis and treatment are key to helping horses with PPID live long, happy lives. Without treatment, symptoms tend to worsen over time and many horses are euthanized as a consequence of laminitis, recurrent foot abscesses or complications related to bacterial infections.

Some of the cases in this outbreak have been linked to a raw diet fed to dogs. I know we want to do what's best for our beloved pets (myself included), but this is exactly why I will never feed raw - too much risk to your dog and immune-compromised individuals in the home.

Due to horses recently testing positive in California, please be mindful as we head into the show/travel season

The Equine Disease Communication Center is closely monitoring the recent Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) outbreaks in California.

EHV-1 most often causes a respiratory disease which is usually mild and self-limiting, but the infection occasionally leads to the life-threatening neurologic disease equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopthy (EHM).

To date (2.25.22), a total of 50 horses have been confirmed positive in the San Mateo, Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles Counties.

As we're coming into summer, it's important to keep a close eye on our four-legged friends. Here are some great tips for keeping your horse healthy and comfortable during the hot weather.

As tough as steamy summers can be on humans, they can be even harder on horses.

Deworming PSA:

As many of you are aware, we are starting to see a lot of parasite resistance to our popular dewormers. The recommendation in the past was to deworm every 2-3 months; however, we've come to realize this was contributing to that resistance. The new recommendation is to submit a f***l test to check for the presence of parasites and to then treat if indicated. Foals are the exception; they are still on the every 2 month protocol (starting at 2 months of age) until they are 12 months old.

Please also keep in mind, however, that tapeworms and encysted small strongyles will not show up on that f***l test, since they burrow into the walls of the intestines. Due to this, my recommendation (as well as the protocol I've implemented for my own horses) is to deworm only twice a year as long as your yearly f***l test is negative. Sometime in March-May, I like to deworm with a Panacur PowerPak, which targets encysted strongyles. In September-December, I like to deworm with Ivermectin/Praziquantel, which targets tapeworms. Both of these dewormers also take care of the usual worms.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the protocol, types of dewormers, or f***l test; I am always happy to answer!
