This is a good article on nosework indication which could give some insight to our sport as well. It is good to give thought as to what we want our dogs to do when they indicate a find.

The value of a trained behavior at source by Julie Symons | Dec 11, 2019 | Dogs Sports | 0 comments Yep, that’s right, I’m talking about a trained indication!!! For many dogs and handlers, teaching a clear behavior at source – otherwise known as an indication or final response – can be very ...

My dog isn't cut out for Barn Hunt

One of the things that surprises me over and over is that people don't think finding rats needs to be trained. Yes some dogs don't need much training to do barn hunt. But others have no idea what we want. And especially what we want to do with a stinky smelly rat. The trainers will spend time teaching a dog to watch them on the heel for obedience. Or to sit, roll over or speak. But if the dog does not immediately show interest or indicate the rat they feel this is not the sport for them.

Some dogs need to be paid to have an interest in ratting. Just as they do to enjoy heeling. Retrieving or speaking. Yes it takes time and effort as training does. Indications are a major problem in Barn Hunt because dogs aren't trained to give them. We rush through the indication part to get to the "hunting" part. Then lament that our dog is not showing us when they find the rat. Did you teach the dog what you want to see as an indication? Or did you just try to figure out if they moved a body part just so when they got to the tube. I want to know for certain when my dog hits the rat tube. And I train for that. Over and over. Yes I watch them to see what their indication is. But I want it to increase to the point that it is significant. I will pay for that.

I enjoy the training part, I have accomplished something if I get my dog to enjoy it also. I don't blame you for going on to something easier that they do naturally. But if you want a title at least give them a chance to figure out what it is we want from them.
