I’m feeling a little sappy as I’ve been looking through adoption pictures, sweet memories of pups, adoptions, foster fails, late night adoptions, all the fun crazy stuff that’s happened this year. The good, the bad, the ugly.
I always wonder if our Forgotten Paws pups remember me.
I don’t get to spend as much time with them as our director, Heather, or our kennel staff, but whenever I walk through the doors, they’re always excited for a little love and attention.
Recently, one of our former rescued mamas came back for a visit after being adopted by one of our own workers. The moment she saw me, she ran straight over and practically climbed into my lap and just snuggled. I loved on her every time I came over, I didn’t play with her puppies, because most everybody else did, I gave her the love, because she was taking care of so many pups and being an amazing mama.
Rescue is a bittersweet thing.
I hate to see them go, but I love watching them leave.
The hard decisions stay with you. The dogs you couldn’t help. The “what ifs.” The mistakes that teach you how to do better next time. The nights spent wondering if you made the right call.
But every once in a while, a dog comes back and reminds you why you keep going.
Since opening our doors in October, more than 400 dogs have had their lives changed for the better. (And many more as Heather was saving lives long before Forgotten Paws ever existed.) Hundreds of families have gained loyal companions. Hundreds of dogs have traded fear for safety, uncertainty for love, and kennels for couches.
The laughter. The tears. The impossible decisions. The scratches, bruises, and hills… no…mountains of dog p**p.
Every bit of it becomes worth it when a once-forgotten dog comes running back just to say hello.
Thank you our wonderful community for giving our dogs a chance to come running back to say hello. Our community blows my mind constantly. The donations, the support, the positivity, the pure love for animals on this page. From the bottom of our hearts and our paws, thank you.
