Monroe Veterinary Services

Monroe Veterinary Services Dr. Dyer and Dr. Thompson provide a full range of large and small animal services to KY and TN. We also are available for ambulatory care on the farm.

At Monroe Veterinary Services we pride ourselves in quality and efficient care. We strive to develop personal relationships with clients and patients alike. Serving South Central Kentucky for 47 years, we are proud to play an active role in the community that we know and love. Dr. Wesley Dyer is a native to Monroe County, having grown up in Bugtussle, KY. He obtained his Doctorate of Veterinary Me

dicine from Tuskegee University in 2014. In the summer of 2021 he purchased Tri-County Veterinary Services, changing its name but preserving its high level of customer and patient care. Small animals are seen at our clinic so that we may allow the best of care for them. At our clinic we are able to perform diagnostics and provide on the spot treatment if needed. We encourage clients to visit our facility with their companions so that they may become acquainted with our clinic and our staff. In this way, they can develop a bond and feel comfortable should they ever need to come in for treatment or hospitalization. We have haul-in facilities that allow for us to process herds or treat sick animals on-site. Our parking lot is designed to provide room and make it easier for clients to come and go. Our vet trucks are fully equipped to handle routine or emergency care.

You’ll be seeing a friendly new face around the clinic this summer!

Gary Gearlds is a Monroe County graduate who continued his education by completing his undergraduate degree in 2022 at Western Kentucky University. He is currently a third-year veterinary student at Auburn University.

Gary will be spending the summer with us working alongside Dr. Wesley Dyer to further grow his knowledge and hands-on skills in mixed animal medicine. After graduation, his plan is to return home and serve our community as a mixed animal veterinarian.

We are excited to have him at Monroe Veterinary Services and know many of you will enjoy getting to know him!

Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Addison as she joins the Monroe Vet family! 🐾🤍

Addison graduated from Barren County High School in 2024 and went on to attend the Lindsey Institute of Cosmetology, where she completed her program in July 2025. She is currently a cosmetologist at Two Brunettes in Glasgow.

She will be helping us as a part-time receptionist, combining her love for people with her passion for animals. In her spare time, Addison enjoys showing cattle, spending time at the lake, and being with her mini Goldendoodle, Lola.

We are so excited to have her on our team—be sure to say hi when you see her! 🐶✨

🦠 Where does Parvo live? (Hint: almost everywhere 😳)

With recent cases in surrounding counties, it’s important to understand just how tough this virus is.

⚠️ Parvo can live for MONTHS—even up to a year—in the environment.

🐾 It’s commonly found in:
• Soil and grass (yards, parks, dog runs)
• Sidewalks and parking lots
• Kennels and cages
• Food and water bowls
• Shoes, clothing, and hands

🚨 That means your dog doesn’t have to be around a sick dog to get infected.

🦠 How it spreads:
Parvo is spread through infected f***s (even tiny amounts you can’t see).

🐶 Who is most at risk:
• Puppies
• Unvaccinated dogs
• Dogs not fully boosted

💉 Best protection: VACCINES.
Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, avoid high-traffic areas and unknown dogs.

💙 If you have questions about your pet’s vaccine status or risk, give us a call—we’re here to help.

🤢 Is your pet vomiting green foam—emergency or not?

It can be scary to see, but not every case is an emergency. Here’s how to tell the difference 👇

🟢 May NOT be an emergency:
• Vomits once but is acting normal
• Still eating and drinking
• No other symptoms

🔴 CALL YOUR VET ASAP if you notice:
• Repeat vomiting
• Not eating or drinking
• Lethargy
• Signs of pain or discomfort

⚠️ Green foam is often bile (from an empty stomach), but it can also point to something more serious—especially if symptoms continue.

Today Dr. Thompson performed a nasolacrimal duct flush on a mare. Horses have a tear duct that drains tears from the eye down into the nose. When that duct becomes blocked with debris or inflammation, tears can overflow and run down the horse’s face.

To help clear the blockage, we gently place a small catheter into the opening of the tear duct located inside the nostril. Sterile saline is then slowly flushed through the duct.

If the duct is open, the fluid will travel up through the tear duct and exit near the corner of the eye, helping flush out any debris or buildup that may be causing the blockage.

This is a quick and minimally invasive procedure that often restores normal tear drainage and helps keep the eye comfortable.

🦨 It’s skunk season in Kentucky… and some dogs are learning the hard way.

If your pet has an unfortunate run-in with a skunk, try this odor-removing mix:

• 1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
• ¼ cup baking soda
• 1–2 tsp Dawn dish soap

Apply to the dry coat (avoid eyes), let sit 5–10 minutes, then rinse well.

🚫 Skip tomato juice — it doesn’t work!

If your pet was sprayed in the eyes or seems uncomfortable, give us a call.
