Linktr.ee/thezoeygroup
A group of volunteers working together to save dogs in the Houston TX area; doing it all in the name of ZOEY, a badly beaten, neglected & abused deaf, white Pitbull. She was found on an empty lot by none other than another pitbull, REX, who by hawling alerted his human companions who then went to find ZOEY. She was taken to the vet to get treated, she was in bad shape, emac

iated with several broken bones, her hips and ribs were broken and she was full of fleas, completely covered in them but sadly she was anemic too. We were hopeful, she had been found, Zoey had been rescued; now Zoey had a future to look forward to where there is no neglect only Love and Compassion. Sadly, our ZOEY left us on July 5th. 2013. We save others on her name, her mission is to help other animals in need. Help ZOEY help others!

Despite the challenges, Volk's journey was not without its shining moments, as he continued to inspire with his resilience, battling myoclonic seizures every step of the way since day one. The debilitating spondylitis, a severe bacterial or fungal infection that ravaged his spine and caused paralysis, did not deter his spirit. With every setback, his medical team gathered strength from his unwavering will, yet it became clear that his quality of life was severely impacted, confined to a life without movement. The active and severe inflammation of spondylitis brought high levels of pain, often acute and severe, with a rapid and destructive progression. Isolation was a necessity due to the risk of Brucellosis, and the possibility of positive tests meant that Volk's journey to find a forever home would be impossible due to the zoonotic nature of the disease, posing a risk not just to him but to those who cared for him. The combination of diseases like Distemper, coupled with Spondylitis and the risk of Brucellosis, elevated the risk for Volk and his caregivers. The decision to provide Volk with a peaceful goodbye was made with heavy hearts and only after every avenue was explored to alleviate his suffering. His dedicated doctors endeavored to find solace for his seizures, but unfortunately, relief was found, and exhaustion took its toll. In the end, peace prevailed. Volk is now free from the relentless shaking and the unbearable pain, his story told not in sorrow but in the hearts of those who loved him deeply, and in the strength he found to face each day this last week. He was cared for with compassion and loved beyond measure even if for a short time.
Abandoning an animal is an act of cruelty and I hope some day, this cruelty will end. Volk, you mattered and we wish we could have found you earlier in life.

🧾if you need to see his invoice I will post them in the first comments or you are welcome to request them by messaging the rescue directly.
I have tagged Nikki, the person who was willing to adopt him if he got better. She was kept updated and agreed the decision to stop his suffering was the correct one. Thank you Nikki for your willingness and support of a dog you never met but I know you loved.

Volk’s condition hasn’t changed much. He still isn’t standing, he continues to have the myoclonal seizures, short continuos jerks while he is fully conscious. Systemically, he is ok. His red blood cell count is improving, his blood glucose is steady, his daily blood work is normal, he is eating all of his meals, he is urinating without help, no vomiting, normal respiration except neurologically, he is very sick. He was seen by a neurologist today and it has been agreed that all his issues are secondary to Distemper and this is concerning as it may be a condition he will never overcome or even get to a level where he can walk and function. If he doesn’t, the question then is, what does his quality of life look like in the future?
Then we have the issue of the Spondylitis, which is a localized infection of the bone and vertebral disks, almost always caused by bacteria or fungi. Still waiting for test results on this too.
We then are facing the issue of the sarcoptic mange and what is the best way to treat it as we know most of the drugs use for it have certain risk of toxicity.
He is Heartworm positive too.
No matter how long the list of health problems he may have, we are still rallying behind him but the question remains: what is Quality of Life of Volk in the future if he is not standing to walk on his own at least?
We are not making any decisions tonight. We will meet tomorrow with his doctors and reconsider everything again after hopefully some improvements .
I will update again as soon as we know more.
Regarding the intralipid treatment, I’m sorry to report there was no improvement.
Zully Vasquez Ventura I’m tagging you to update your followers.

Update on Volk.

On Saturday, June 13, Volk received a blood transfusion and did not show any adverse reactions in the first few hours. They gave him methocarbamol earlier and his convulsions/twitching subsided for the night. Unfortunately, they continue again this morning. He was started on enteral nutrition via his nasogastric tube. He still requires the support to maintain his temperature and he is very critical, but he is overall stable but the twitching returned.
After a conversation with the doctor just a while ago, we discussed the use of ILE - intralipids- in the event we are dealing with some kind of toxicity. We don’t know what he could have gotten back there on the streets.
We will get another update later this evening and I will share it but for now, Volk is very critical and his prognosis is guarded. Please keep him in your thoughts and send him all best wishes for a prompt diagnosis, correct treatment and recovery.
The samples for tests sent out won’t be back for a few days. It’s a waiting time treating symptoms and trying things. Thank you all for following his story, I hope we can add a happy ending/ beginning for Volk.

Volk arrived yesterday June 12th at GCVS, was placed in viral isolation and monitored every hour, his vitals were normal, had normal oxigen saturation and normal Blood Pressure .
His gums were pale as expected due to his very anemic state.
He was tested for all parasites and his skin was scrapped to determined the type of skin issue.
Results: He is Heartworm Positive and has Sarcoptic Mange.
They triage x-rayed his chest and abdomen as well as run a triage ultrasound .
Lungs are not normal, which could be due to the heartworm disease or other infection but there is some fluid in there. Bladder is distended and uncomfortable in part becauhe is lateral and not walking for them to go potty right now. He is in fluid therapy since arrival, fed thru gastric tubes and some samples have been collected to run other tests like Distemper, Brucella and Neospora to determine the cause of his very aggressive spasms.

He was about to start a blood transfusion at 1pm today Saturday and will remain in critical care for the weekend . On Monday he will have a second ultrasound and will be seen by a neurologist.

He still don’t know the cause of his shaking. Investigation is under way by the medical team.
I will post another update when I have it.
He remains at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, TX

Hospital has promised to send pics and video soon. The video below is from when he arrived at our vet after he was picked up by Zully.

📣📣📣UPDATE: The person who called and asked for help for the 2 GSD puppies has informed me she found a rescue to help her. I don’t know which one so I can’t tell you any more about what happens to them.
The lone dog abandoned by his front yard is no longer around, it is believed the neighbors called animal control before we could help him.
The kitten still needs a foster.

If you ever thought about volunteering, this is the time. Temperatures in Houston are getting close to 100 and animals on the streets are suffering.
A kitten was recently found in the middle of the road and vet tells us he suffered trauma most likely from a car or being thrown .
2 German Shepherd puppies live tied up outside under the blistering Sun and a poor adult dog was left out on the front yard of a home that was recently vacated; This family member was left behind, unloved.
Our rescue can only help when people like you sign up to become fosters. In order for us to be able to save these lives, we need help from you . Please step up to help. A foster is a temporary home while the animals get to the vet and find a forever home.
All medical needs are covered by the rescue.
