Despite the challenges, Volk's journey was not without its shining moments, as he continued to inspire with his resilience, battling myoclonic seizures every step of the way since day one. The debilitating spondylitis, a severe bacterial or fungal infection that ravaged his spine and caused paralysis, did not deter his spirit. With every setback, his medical team gathered strength from his unwavering will, yet it became clear that his quality of life was severely impacted, confined to a life without movement. The active and severe inflammation of spondylitis brought high levels of pain, often acute and severe, with a rapid and destructive progression. Isolation was a necessity due to the risk of Brucellosis, and the possibility of positive tests meant that Volk's journey to find a forever home would be impossible due to the zoonotic nature of the disease, posing a risk not just to him but to those who cared for him. The combination of diseases like Distemper, coupled with Spondylitis and the risk of Brucellosis, elevated the risk for Volk and his caregivers. The decision to provide Volk with a peaceful goodbye was made with heavy hearts and only after every avenue was explored to alleviate his suffering. His dedicated doctors endeavored to find solace for his seizures, but unfortunately, relief was found, and exhaustion took its toll. In the end, peace prevailed. Volk is now free from the relentless shaking and the unbearable pain, his story told not in sorrow but in the hearts of those who loved him deeply, and in the strength he found to face each day this last week. He was cared for with compassion and loved beyond measure even if for a short time.
Abandoning an animal is an act of cruelty and I hope some day, this cruelty will end. Volk, you mattered and we wish we could have found you earlier in life.
🧾if you need to see his invoice I will post them in the first comments or you are welcome to request them by messaging the rescue directly.
I have tagged Nikki, the person who was willing to adopt him if he got better. She was kept updated and agreed the decision to stop his suffering was the correct one. Thank you Nikki for your willingness and support of a dog you never met but I know you loved.
