Kathy Pauly Pet Sitting Professional

Caring for You, Your Pets and Your Home. I offer an array of services, tailored to you and your pets needs, specializing in pet sitting services for horses, dogs, cats, birds and other small animals. As a professional pet sitter for the past twelve years with over 25 years experience in animal veterinary care and animal welfare, I provide quality care for pets

in their own home, visiting one to three times a day as needed, whether a client is on vacation or just away from the house all day. Animals do much better in their normal, safe and secure environment while surrounded by familiar sights, sounds and smells. They receive love and personal attention, and are able to stick to their normal routine. This eliminates the trauma of an unfamiliar environment, close proximity to other animals and possible exposure to disease and infection. Owners benefit by knowing their family pets are in the loving and caring hands of an experienced caretaker who can deal with any issue that may arise. And as an experienced veterinary technician, I am able to provide for the special needs of elderly pets and pets with acute or chronic medical conditions, administering medication or other care as prescribed by their veterinarian, and be on the lookout for any early signs of illness. Owners will also have a greater sense of security for their home with someone going in and out two or three times a day. I can bring in the mail and newspapers, turn different lights on each day and water the plants. If a client is not out of town but needs their dog walked or bathed, or taken to the vet or groomer, I can take care of that as well. I tailor my services to my clients and their pets needs. I also offer boarding in my home on an individualized limited basis. If you only have one or two pets and they are socialized and housetrained, we are happy to have them join our family while you are out of town. Initial Consultation (No Charge): At this visit, we can complete the necessary paperwork, answer questions, transfer keys and tour your home, while discussing detailed instructions on how to care for your pets. This meeting is only needed prior to my first visit to your home, and should be scheduled at least 48 hours prior to service. Rates: $24.00 per hour, ½ hour minimum (1 hr. minimum outside of Toccoa or more than 25 miles roundtrip) plus fuel. Boarding will be quoted upon request. Call 706-827-0044 or 706-491-7333

Jacks is a very special senior dog that I’m fostering for the shelter. He is 13 years old and LOVES everyone! He loves people, loves other dogs, loves petting and loves to just chill on the couch. He truly has a wonderful personality, is well housetrained and is happiest indoors with people to love on him. For those looking for a lovable dog without the rambunctioness and high energy of a younger dog, he will make the perfect pet. He doesn’t like cats, though, so his new home should be a dog-only household. If you’re interested in meeting Jacks please call me at 706-491-7333 or call the shelter at 706-282-3275.

This got me all choked up! 💖

“Please, bring me my Wh**ey. I want to say goodbye… Don’t force him, just explain. He understands everything,” the father pleaded softly.

The son nodded and went to find the family’s old dog. Wh**ey, nearly blind and weary, had been his sick father’s only loyal companion. Two tired souls comforting each other, day after day. Now, it was time for a final farewell.

When the son returned, the father could barely lift his head. His trembling hands gripped the sheet as he whispered inaudible words. His eyes, full of pain and love, still searching for someone.

The son gently placed Wh**ey on the bed.
“Say goodbye, Wh**ey…” he whispered, his voice breaking.

Wh**ey didn’t need words. He stepped forward, as if he could still see, and snuggled up against his beloved human’s face.
“Wh**ey… my dear Wh**ey…” the father murmured with his last breath.

The dog nuzzled his nose against the fading warmth of his owner’s cheek. Real tears welled up in his cloudy eyes.

With a final effort, the father lifted a shaking hand and rested it on Wh**ey’s soft fur. His fingers barely moved, but the dog could feel it—all the love, warmth, and silent despair. He stayed there, close and still, as if he could hold back time.

The son watched, tears streaming down his face. He had never seen anything so heartbreakingly beautiful. Purest love filled the room.

“Thank you… for everything…” whispered the father, as his hand grew still. Wh**ey did not leave his side. He continued to hug his friend, as if he knew letting go would mean losing him forever.

Silence took over the room. Only the gentle sound of the dog’s whimpering remained, as if trying to hold on to the last thread of life.

The son sat beside the bed and covered his father’s cold hand with his own.
“Dad… We’re here. You’re not alone.”

Wh**ey remained pressed against his human. His little heart was broken. Then he lifted his head and howled softly, mournfully, as if calling him back. As if begging him to return. Then, once more, Wh**ey nuzzled his father’s face, licked his eyelids, and curled up, trying to absorb all the pain and cold that nothing could stop.

“He’s gone now, Wh**ey…” the son whispered.

Minutes, hours passed. Time stood still. That night, the son realized that love can be so pure and true, it needs no words—no language could ever describe it.

When morning came, Wh**ey was still there, lying by his friend’s side. He had not abandoned him. He stood guard, protecting the last silence of his beloved human.

The son gently lifted the dog in his arms. Wh**ey sighed and lay still. His mission was complete. Until the end. Forever.

A pet’s love is truly one of the purest there is.
They don’t speak with words, but you can feel everything in their gaze, in the way they wait for you, in how they curl up next to you whether you’re happy or broken inside.

Some say, “It’s just a dog, why so much love?” But it’s not just that. They’re part of your life, your story, your heart.

They’re there when everyone else leaves.
They sit with you in silence, in laughter, in tears. They don’t judge, they don’t fail you. They simply love.

So, hug your dog more. Cherish them always. Look into their eyes and say thank you. Because their love may not last forever…
but it will live in your heart for a lifetime.

As a long time supporter for the Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter and as someone who worked with Joan Allen and the Stephens County Humane Society to help get our shelter built, I’d like to speak up on some problems I’ve been seeing the past few years in carrying out our Mission: to improve the lives of animals, alleviate their suffering and elevate their status in the community.

Animal Control had worked in and with the shelter until it was decided to give animal control to the County Marshals. We had been promised that they would be trained and certified, which never happened. After Covid hit, costs started rising, the number of animals brought to the shelter were rising, and yet funding by the County and City, adjusting for inflation, did not keep up with these rising costs. These costs are directly correlated to the rising number of yearly intakes. To help cover these increased costs, the Front Desk position was eliminated, and as our Veterinary Technicians left for other work, they were not replaced. Their work was then divided amongst already over-worked and underpaid staff, most of whom have not received a pay increase in three years and have not received the 3% increase that regular County and City employees usually receive. To further reduce costs, the Shelter Board also did not conduct a nationwide search, as had been done previously, in order to find a new Executive Director; a position that previously required shelter, business and management experience. Of course, salary is always commensurate with experience. For the shelter’s new Director, this meant having to learn these skills on the fly, which is difficult at best.

Low-cost Spay/Neuter for the public was ended during the pandemic and the program has not been restarted due to a lack of funding to help subsidize the cost. So, the number of stray animals continue to rise, increasing the shelter’s operating costs. It’s a vicious cycle that could be ended by increasing the funding that the County and City give each year to the shelter, commensurate not only with rising costs, but to subsidize spay/neuter programs for the public. This will reduce their operating costs in the long term. Otherwise, our original vision for a Humane Shelter will be lost and they will not be able to carry out their mission that they have worked so hard for since the shelter was first incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 2010, opening its doors in February 2013.

If you share our vision for a truly Humane Shelter, please join us in speaking out at the Shelter Board’s next meeting, Tuesday, August 19th at 5:30 PM in the back conference room at the Toccoa Municipal Building.

Every year, we see dozens of accidental and unwanted litters of puppies and kittens that end up in the shelter or on the streets. Already this year, we are 300 animals ahead of where we were last year. Please help us stop this trend by getting your animals spayed and neutered.

Here are some low-cost options near us:

Please help if you can! Volunteering and fostering is always needed. The shelter is short-staffed and needs the extra help. And with the shelter full, fostering dogs or cats is a big help, both for the pets that get out of the shelter while awaiting adoption or transport, and reducing the number of animals the staff have to care for.

It's been a hard week for the shelter. We took in 25 strays and 28 animals from another hoarding case. Staff are working longer hours to provide care for everyone, and our hearts ache at the sheer number of homeless animals in our community. Please consider supporting your local shelter in any way you can and show appreciation for our amazing team. They go above and beyond every day, despite often feeling like we are fighting a losing battle.

How can you help?

This is Peppa, a pot-bellied pig that was brought to the Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter, needing a new home. She is in a temporary foster home, but needs a longer term foster until she is either adopted or transferred to a rescue group. She is very loving, enjoys getting petted, and wants close contact, even coming up the stairs to lay by the back door. She gets along with dogs well. Can someone help to foster or adopt this sweet baby?
