So we have some new jumping spiders in our crew at MME! In looking for some enclosures we came across TaylorMade4Spoods on Etsy and she created this wonderful enclosure for our sling (baby spider). This enclosure measures 2.5"L x 2.5"W x 4" tall. She was wonderful to work with, very responsive, and included some goodies in our box as well. Check out taylormade4spoods.etsy.com for these cute enclosures!

Well lookie what we have here! This is the part of breeding we enjoy most, the surprises! This little one crawled out of the egg today and to say we were surprised is an understatement! His mom is a GHI Leopard and his dad is a Blackhead Black Pastel Mojave.

All of these genes are darker in nature, and we think what happened here is this little one managed to get all of the genes and the parts of those traits it got formed a perfect storm to make it almoat solid black with a white belly. We will be able to tell more after it has its first shed.

Who said science isn't cool?!

One of the questions in ball python breeding is "to cut, or not to cut?" Some breeders cut the egg open within 2-3 days of them hatching and some let them hatch naturally
While there is truly no right or wrong to this question, we prefer to cut.

There are two main reasons for this. The first is that, well, I am SUPER impatient to see the babies!! The real reason is we like to check for three things that could PREVENT a baby snake from hatching on its own. They are genetic deformities, tangling in the umbilical cord, and no egg tooth present.

Baby snakes in the egg develop whats called an egg tooth that disappears after they hatch. Think of it like a little box cutter on their upper lip that slices the egg shell to allow them to crawl out of the egg. For some reason some babies don't develop this tool.

In the clutch we cut tonight we had a baby that did NOT have this tooth! It seemed like the perfect opportunity to get a good close up view.
