A cat thought to have died in the Los Angeles wildfires in January proved that there may be some merit to the saying that the animal has nine lives after all.

Pull out your green clothes and shamrocks, St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner! While typically filled with fun and exciting festivities, St Patrick’s Day can unfortunately pose some unlucky hazards to our furry friends.

Thank you to First Community IFoundation Partnership of Pennsylvania for organizing such a fruitful and community-driven event, to KC101 Hometown Country for being a great local sponsor and supporter, to all the other sponsors, and to all media who promoted the event. With only ONE HOUR left, why should you donate during ? Because donations last year helped this sweet family, and while the great news is that 4 kittens found loving new families, their mama Jezebel never got that chance. After the babies were weaned, Jezebel made it through her spay surgery and the removal of some nasty back teeth, but during recuperation, she suffered labored breathing and other complications. Despite the vet's best efforts, Jezebel didn't recover. The vet suspected that she was much older than anyone thought, maybe 8-10, and may have had an underlying heart condition. Jezebel was a sweet, loving girl who we were excited to see thrive in a home of her own.

If you haven't given yet, consider doing so in Jezebel's memory, so that we may help spay other cats when they're younger and more resilient, so they have better chance at a longer, happier life.

Why should you donate during , GOING ON NOW? Because without your help, these 19 dogs wouldn't have gotten their second chances at loving homes. In 2024, Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries took in 38 stray dogs found in Tioga County, only half of which were reclaimed by their owners. The 19 pictured here didn't have anyone looking for them and possibly no one who cared, until they were found and brought to us. We will never know how their stories started, but thanks to donations that keep us operating, we were able to give them happy endings they deserve.

Help us help more like them by giving now until 11:59 p.m. at https://www.raisetheregion.org/organization/Second-Chance-Animal-Sanctuaries

Why should you donate during , GOING ON NOW? Because donations are what have kept Second Chance going for 24 years, saving hundreds of local animals every year. We aren't funded at the county, state or federal level. We operate solely on donations from kind individuals or occasional businesses, as well as grants we have to apply for (and may not get).

In 2024, our expenses were up 15% (including a $10,000 increase in veterinary expenses), but income was down 1% from 2023. We aren't great at math, but that's just not adding up.

Animals are sadly not a priority in this area, but we're trying to change that. Our county doesn't even currently have a humane officer or dog warden. The situation is only getting worse, as evidenced by the prevalence of backyard breeders, "accidental" litters, the condition animals are found in, how many animal surrender requests we receive, and how many folks aren't able to afford veterinary care.

These are problems that not only affect the lives of these innocent animals, but the people of our communities. Why?

- Animal abuse and neglect are signs or precursors for abuse or neglect of humans, including domestic abuse and abuse/neglect of children.
- Unvaccinated animals running loose are a public health hazard and run the risk of spreading devastating diseases such as rabies to both humans and other animals.
- Animals unnecessarily bred take away homes from those already here and only line the pockets of breeders, instead of nonprofits who don't make a dime.
- Un-fixed animals run the risk of certain cancers and on average, live shorter lives.

Please, stand up for those without a voice or lifeline by helping the animals and people of Tioga County. Give during Raise the Region to help us win or earn extra funds from sponsoring businesses. It's going on until 11:59 tonight.

Why should you donate during , GOING ON NOW? Because donations last year helped and will continue to help dogs like Ryker. This sweet boy was found as a stray in Mansfield with a severely swollen leg and backside. Ryker is now in a loving home, but is still under our umbrella for ongoing financial support. He's affectionately known as our most expensive dog, because he's undergone several surgeries and specialist appointments to try to alleviate the swelling and pain and determine its cause. The last bout was a torn ligament that bled internally for about 20 days until it opened through the leg, which was followed by a 22-day stay at the vet. Because Ryker has vasculitis and does not heal quickly, another surgery is not in the plan. He's on medication for life and his mom reports his pain is managed and he's doing great right now! This poor guy has been through SO much, but we're thankful he gets to be comfortable and loved in a real home.

Help us continue helping Ryker with his future medical needs. Donate during Raise the Region any time until 11:59 p.m. tonight to help us get chances at matching or extra funds from sponsoring businesses. Give at www.raisetheregion.org/organizations/second-chance-animal-sanctuaries
