We were recently accused of being dishonest on a previous post when referring to bald hornets as “aggressive” and I would like to address this! As a species, the bald hornet is not as aggressive as some other wasps, such as the eastern yellow jacket. That said, if they feel their nest is being threatened in any way, they will absolutely attack and they are a force to be reckoned with when they do!

The problem is that the vast majority of hornet nests are located in areas where people and pets congregate. Often times people or pets will come too close to a nest without even realizing it’s there. (“Too close” being anywhere within 10 feet of the nest) This nest was overhanging the street in a residential neighborhood. Numerous people, and dogs, had been stung while walking underneath it, unaware of its presence until it was too late!

Bald hornets are absolutely aggressive and they will absolutely sting you, and they sure do hurt! We can certainly attest to this, as getting stung is a risk we often take to remove these nests and keep you and your pets safe! If you have a hornets nest, do not approach it!
