GSVS wishes everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day! Chocolates are a common gift, but chocolate is not good for your pets. Pet owners should take precautions to keep chocolate away from their pets to keep their pets healthy. Chocolate contains high amounts of fat and caffeine-like stimulants known as methylxanthines. Chocolate can produce clinical effects in dogs causing them to vomit and have diarrhea, urinate excessively, be hyperactive, have an abnormal heart rhythm, seizing and even death in some serious cases. The darker the chocolate, the higher the potential for clinical problems from methylxanthine poisoning. White chocolate has the lowest amount of methylxanthine and baking chocolate contains the highest. Other common toxins include ingestion of anti-freeze, potpourri, and poinsettia plants. Keep your pets safe and healthy this Valentine’s Day!

Patrick likes to go out in the snow with his blankie. If your dog is out for an extended walk in the snow, be sure to give them a good rubdown upon their return and pay special attention to their paws. Ice and salt can become wedged between their toes.
