We talk about socializing our puppies a lot - but what do we really mean?
At Domestic Dog Training, we use this term a lot, but what we really do is better described as positive exposure, confidence building exercises, handling experience, or neutrality training. It is not just puppy playtime or letting them greet as many people and dogs as possible.
Our puppies are thoughtfully introduced to the things they will encounter throughout life: different people, children, handling, household noises, crates, public environments, other animals, grooming tools, collars, leashes, car rides, and appropriate interactions with other dogs.
in addition to training, our "Junior Care Team" comes in to help. Emily's daughter, Sophia, Cailey's nephew, other families, and friends visit and provide positive experiences for our puppies.
Sophia has been coming by to visit her mom at work since before she was able to walk. Now at 3, she is a calm, gentle, and confident leader to our puppies, which helps them learn that kids can be predictable, safe, and nothing to get overly excited or nervous about. Sophia can be seen lifting puppies up onto an elevated surface and helping them down, this activity creates confidence with handling, new surfaces, and will give them a great head start with table manners for grooming!
We focus on building puppies who can calmly experience the world - not puppies who feel the need to rush up to every person, dog, or new thing they see.
That foundation matters. Early exposure helps create confident, stable dogs who are better prepared for family life, training, grooming, vet visits, boarding, and everything else that comes with being a well-rounded companion.
