I have never had a tougher buck to mount, and it’s not in the ways you would think. The hardest part was grooming the hide! Every whitetail I’ve mounted has had some sort of scarring from fighting but nothing like this buck. All the scars on this one caused so much interruption of the hair pattern it looked as though it rolled around in a burr patch. After working on grooming for 5 hours I got it to this point, groomed enough to look pleasant but not too much to destroy the character of this warrior buck! (It also doesn’t hurt to remember he didn’t have a hairbrush when he was romping around the woods)

While an open mouth bear rug tends to be the most popular option, I was super excited to see a closed mouth bear rug come across my to-do and it came out beautifully.

Thank you to everybody who has trusted me with their European mounts this last season! As I wrap up the last batch of skulls I now know how long it will take (as this was my first year working with beetles through a colleague) I appreciate everybody’s patience as I’m working out the kinks so next year timeline should be getting your skull back within 6 months as long as work load isn’t larger but I won’t mind if it does get bigger ;) again, thank you for your business fellow hunters!

This mountain lion finally made it to its new home across the states! Doing work for a fellow taxidermist can be pretty daunting but everything came out beautifully, excited to see the base and habitat he puts with it!

Symmetry is something I focus on while working and something about this whitetails antlers were just bugging me this time, when cleaning the skull plate, I noticed below the right antler there was an old gouge, probably from fighting, but didn’t think anything of it; you’d be surprised the amount of injuries I find while preparing the deer to be mounted (especially whitetails). Once I started putting everything together I just figured I screwed the horns on crooked so I checked and rechecked and triple checked and checked again! Getting frustrated I finally realized that the injury was more important than I thought. It had caused that right horn to grow more straight up, instead of following the natural slope of his head, causing that side to look larger (didn’t help that the tines on that side were naturally longer too). I set the horns up and mocked up the hide on the form and it fit perfectly with the antler holes in the hide. At that point I just put my perfectionism aside and started sewing. As aesthetic as a symmetrical deer is, that is not always the case and you gotta embrace the imperfect beauty of the animal 🦌🧡.
