I was catching up on some wisdom before the Warwick Schiller 🐴 clinic in Maine this weekend.

Reading in my horse's stall, listening to her munch away, made me feel relaxed and content. There was nothing but us. Then this Lao Tzu quote fell across the pages.

"If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the moment."

This summer has not gone how I planned: rehabbing a horse, an injury to myself, and navigating the world as an independent trainer travelling between barns and working multiple part time jobs. I've been full of anxiety about what the future holds, and what outcomes may happen. Scheduling my days full, with barely time to breathe, feeling like I am sprinting and then waiting for everything to catch up. I have been morose looking at the opportunities I missed, the friends and clients I've fallen out of touch with, and how life just generally "used to be."

I don't know what the future holds for me, my career, and my horse, and that is ok. I can miss the old relationships and memories, and be happy that I got to experience them. I can forgive myself for mistakes I've made, and mistakes I'm sure I'll make in the future. I am human, and this is life, and there is no set pathway.

As long as I can enjoy these quiet simple moments with a horse, that will always sooth my soul

It's so easy to get tunnel vision when working with horses. We start to listen to the louder voices, internal and external: what we should be doing, how far behind we are, what everyone else is accomplishing. We tune out the silent conversations our partners try to have with us. Our biggest mistake is to ignore or misread our horses, especially when you aren't able to be present and in tune with your horse.

Girlfriend and I had an unfortunate miscommunication, where I was distracted and in a rush and ignored her, and she told me, in the only way I had left her, how she was feeling. Luckily we are back on the same page, with a fresh start ahead for us.

My horse is the best audience, when I'm having a good day and sharing my successes, or in a bad day and I just need a friendly ear and a mane to cry into. Its only fair to listen to them.

I am thankful for having an equine partner who teaches me every single day.

I love seeing what the seeds of winter produce when riding season comes again 🌷 (or atleast becomes more enjoyable and I don't have to wear 5 layers)

Putting in the time to earn trust and strengthen the bonds isn't always easy or glamorous. Learning how to communicate and listen can be slow and frustrating.
Yet realizing the foundation built on the ground correlates to riding, and the tools you need are already in reach, makes the wins all the more enjoyable.

I'm blown away by how much I've seen my students grow in the last month, and so excited for the long days ahead of us.

I had a great time Sunday working with these three ladies. They have been working on building confidence with their horses, and learning to read their horses' behaviors.

I always say that working with horses is a conversation, and we have to learn to listen as much as talk. It's important to create common "language" we can both understand, and every horse and every human has their own unique "accent"
