Meet Friends of Faye “Praline”! Here’s the rundown on our Montgomery County Animal Shelter Texas senior save! We have taken on her case In efforts to give her a chance to thrive!
4/22 - Praline Headed home to foster care thanks to the Muzny Family. We would like to observe her In a home setting as she Is still not keen to eat much, and anxious In a clinic/shelter setting!
4/21 Dr. Kitten at Stone Ridge - mostly unremarkable diagnostics. Slightly more anemic than when they checked on 4/10 (was 32%, now 29%). Lungs look pretty good. She definitely hates the kennel. We have her out in the recovery room and she'll chill in the dark. Temp was 104 this morning but just checked it after she's been in there chilling and it's 102.6 so l think her kennel anxiety is getting to her. She does have a mass on her neck. The sample I got was pretty undiagnostic.. I scanned her abdomen and didn't see an obvious mass but her spleen is large. Dr Kitten started her on sucralfate, Yunnan baiyao, and another cerenia inj for now. She's been on so many antibiotics and her wounds look gross but also pretty surface level that we chose to not add on more.
4/19- Dr. Crews at MCAS
Praline has a number of concerns that need further care for a positive outcome. She is not faring well in the shelter setting and the hope is that she may be more agreeable to eating with frequent interaction in a more comforting environment. However, there is a very real possibility that she may continue to decline.
Praline has struggled for several weeks with pneumonia, which does show notable improvement on x-rays, but does not appear resolved – she continues to have a mild cough and mild nasal discharge. Her heart rate is elevated, likely secondary to the increased stress of her battle with pneumonia for several weeks – this may indicate permanent heart damage. She has had poor intermittent appetite since she arrived and has lost a lot of weight – on intake she was obese, so overall this is not a bad thing, but of course the means in which she has lost weight is not ideal. She has had courses of daily anti-nausea (Cerenia) injections as well as appetite stimulants and probiotics, but still has diarrhea and drooling. She is reluctant to take *any* oral medications from us at this point, and will spit them out or try to nip if they are forced. Her bloodwork shows that she had a mild anemia of chronic disease, but has shown mild improvement. She has an intermittent fever.
When we take Praline out for interaction, she gets a pep in her step and readily takes treats. She seeks affection and food with enthusiasm when socializing. But, she seems to be incredibly depressed when returned to her kennel in isolation and usually refuses food when offered there. Since she has shown improvement with her pneumonia and her bloodwork shows some positive changes, the hope is that the change in environment will give her the boost to eat and clear her illness, but she will almost certainly continue to decline In shelter
