In Loving Memory of Carmelo

Though your time here was short, little one,
you left paw prints deeper than time itself.
Your fight, your spirit, and your softness reminded us
that every heartbeat matters, no matter how small.

You were loved fiercely in every moment you had,
and that love will not fade—it will carry you onward.
Run free now, without struggle, without pain.
We’ll hold your memory close,
and honor the gift of your life by never forgetting you.

Rest easy, sweet Carmelo.
You were—and always will be—family. 🐾❤️

One House. One Attic. One Raccoon Infestation.

Every single photo below comes from the same home. What looks like “just a raccoon in the attic” turned into:

🔹 Heavy Latrines: Multiple piles of raccoon f***s spread throughout the insulation — a major health risk due to parasites like raccoon roundworm (Baylisascaris).

🔹 Destroyed AC Ducts: Entire HVAC ducts shredded, leaking contaminated air into the home and forcing the system to work harder. Repairs for this kind of damage often cost thousands.

🔹 Contaminated Insulation: Urine, f***s, and nesting activity ruined large portions of insulation, all of which must be removed for the attic to be safe again.

🔹 Wildlife Conflict: One of the most heartbreaking finds — the carcass of a juvenile raccoon, likely killed by another adult inside the attic. These spaces can turn dangerous even for the animals themselves.

👉 This wasn’t years of buildup. Raccoons can create this level of destruction in a very short amount of time. That’s why it’s so important to address noises in the attic right away — before the damage multiplies.

At W.I.L.D. (Wildlife Intervention & Local Defense), we provide non-kill, non-trapping eviction and exclusion services. We remove raccoons safely, sanitize and repair the damage, and fortify the home so it never happens again.

🪶 A Hard Lesson from a Common Grackle

Earlier today, we received a call about a Common Grackle tangled in string high in a tree. The caller had spotted him struggling for about 5 minutes before she found our number. It took me around 20 minutes to arrive on-site, meaning this bird had been trapped for at least 25 minutes.

Tragically, he was still alive and moving until about 10 minutes before I got there. By the time I reached him, the stress and exhaustion had taken too much of a toll.

This loss highlights a few critical truths:
🔹 Birds are extremely vulnerable to entanglement from everyday litter — string, fishing line, balloon ribbon, even long strands of hair.
🔹 Even short periods of stress can lead to capture myopathy, a fatal condition where extreme stress causes muscle damage and organ failure.
🔹 Response time matters — but prevention matters more.

🌎 What we can do together:
✔ Pick up loose string, line, and trash — especially around trees and waterways.
✔ Share wildlife rescue contacts so people know who to call immediately.
✔ Educate others: what seems small or harmless to us can be deadly for wildlife.

This grackle’s life was cut short, but his story reminds us that small actions — like picking up a piece of string — can prevent tragedies and save countless others.

🚨 Rabies: What Germany Taught Us and Why It Matters in the U.S. 🚨

Many people assume rabies is a thing of the past, but in the U.S., it still circulates in raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats, causing thousands of animal infections and costly human exposures every year. Rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear, making prevention critical.

Meanwhile, Germany has managed a remarkable achievement: over a million raccoons now live across the country — and none carry rabies. How did they do it?

Germany’s Timeline to Rabies Elimination

🔵1930s: Raccoons introduced to Germany for fur farming and hunting (pre-WWII).

🔵Post-WWII: Rabies outbreaks continued in foxes, but systematic eradication efforts did not start until decades later.

🔵1980s: Rabies outbreaks in foxes prompted massive oral rabies vaccination (ORV) campaigns. Planes and helicopters dropped millions of vaccine-laden baits across forests and rural landscapes.

🔵1990s–2000s: Continued campaigns steadily increased immunity in fox populations, gradually breaking the rabies transmission cycle.

🔵2008: Germany officially declared free of terrestrial rabies in foxes and other land mammals.

By the time raccoons became widespread in Germany post-WWII, the rabies virus had been largely eliminated from terrestrial wildlife. As a result, raccoons never became a rabies reservoir, despite thriving in cities and suburbs.

Why the U.S. Is Different❓

In the U.S., rabies was already entrenched in wildlife when raccoons expanded along the East Coast. Hunters even translocated raccoons from Florida to boost hunting stocks, unintentionally spreading rabies further. Combined with dense urban raccoon populations, the virus found a permanent home here.

What Can Be Done in the U.S.❓

💚We already have the tools to eliminate rabies in our wildlife, just as Germany did:

🟢Expand oral rabies vaccination programs nationwide for raccoons and foxes.

🟢Develop effective vaccines for skunks, a major reservoir species.

🟢Strengthen public education: secure trash, do not feed wildlife, and limit human–wildlife contact.

🟢Coordinate with neighboring countries like Mexico and Canada to prevent cross-border spread.

🟢Invest politically and financially to sustain multi-decade campaigns.

Why It Matters

🔴Every bite or scratch from a wild animal is a potential life-or-death situation.

🔴Thousands of wild animals are euthanized or tested each year out of caution.

🔴Rabies costs the U.S. hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Germany’s success proves that rabies can be eliminated from wildlife, and it was accomplished through post-WWII public health and wildlife management efforts, not policies from the 1930s. The U.S. has vaccines, expertise, and infrastructure. What we need now is the commitment to act.

💔 Last week, my girlfriend had one of those moments that completely breaks your heart… but also restores your faith in people.

As she was leaving work (she’s an LVT at Banfield), she noticed what looked like a small pile of dog p**p in the parking lot. But as she got closer, she realized it wasn’t p**p at all… it was a tiny, 2–3 day old puppy. 😢

It’s sad but somewhat common for mothers to abandon pups they think won’t survive… but in a busy parking lot? This little one didn’t deserve that. Someone clearly dumped him.

Without a second thought, she ran back inside to grab supplies and started caring for him. Cameras don’t cover that area, so we have no idea who did this, but that hasn’t stopped this little fighter. 💪

Over the past week, he’s been thriving under our care. Tiny as he is—maybe a Chihuahua—he’s showing everyone how strong he really is. 🐶❤️

We still haven’t picked a name for him, so we’d love your help! Drop your suggestions in the comments—let’s find the perfect name for this little survivor. 🐾

🦝🐿️ Prevention Is Cheaper Than Critter Eviction 🏡

Most people don’t think about wildlife until it’s too late: scratching in the attic, droppings in the insulation, or a raccoon throwing a midnight house party in your soffits. By then, the critters are comfy… and you’re footing the bill.

Here’s the truth (straight from the wild side):

Rats & Mice 🐀 – Nature’s electricians… except their “rewiring” means chewing through YOUR wires, insulation, and plumbing. Fire hazard, anyone?

Squirrels 🐿️ – Think of them as furry little construction crews: loud, destructive, and working overtime to remodel your attic into a nursery.

Bats 🦇 – The silent tenants. You might not hear them, but you’ll sure smell the guano. Long-term, it can pose serious health risks.

Raccoons 🦝 – Strong, clever, and not shy about turning vents, eaves, and shingles into an entrance ramp. Once they’re in, it’s like a five-star resort.

Opossums 🐾 – They don’t usually break in… but if you’ve got a hole, they’ll happily say, “Don’t mind if I do.” Consider them the opportunists of the animal kingdom.

Here’s the kicker: every single one of these problems is 100% preventable with the right defenses.

That’s where W.I.L.D. – Wildlife Intervention & Local Defense comes in.

That glue trap didn’t just catch a mouse… it grounded an owl for a year. 🦉💔 Not the kind of ‘pest control’ anyone wants.

🚫 Why Glue Traps Do More Harm Than Good 🚫

This video shows a heartbreaking example: an owl caught on a glue trap. The person who found it wanted to help, but because the glue ripped away critical flight feathers, the owl won’t be able to return to the wild for at least a year — until new feathers grow.

Here’s why glue traps are such a problem ⬇️

❌ Inhumane:
Animals caught suffer slow, painful deaths from starvation, dehydration, or shock. Even when found alive, feathers, fur, or skin often tear away during “rescues,” leaving permanent injuries.

❌ Non-selective:
Glue traps don’t discriminate. They catch anything — owls, hawks, songbirds, lizards, snakes, bats, even family pets. Many of these are protected or beneficial species that actually help control rodent populations naturally.

❌ Ineffective long-term:
Trapping doesn’t fix the root problem. As long as food and shelter are available, more rodents will move in. Glue traps just create a cycle of suffering without solving the issue.

💡 What to do instead:
✔️ Seal entry points around your home (exclusion)
✔️ Remove food and water sources
✔️ Use humane eviction techniques and deterrents
✔️ Call a wildlife professional trained in non-lethal methods
✔️ And best of all — you can always get preventative sealing done ahead of time and avoid the hassle, stress, and cost later.

At W.I.L.D. (Wildlife Intervention & Local Defense), we’re committed to 100% no-kill, no-trap solutions. No poisons. No fuss. Just honest, humane eviction and long-term prevention.

🌎 Protect your home without causing unnecessary suffering — there’s always a better way than glue traps.

🐍 Glue Traps & Slippery Noodles – W.I.L.D. Edition
Species Spotlight: Plain-Bellied Water Snake (Nerodia erythrogaster)

I was just wrapping up at the infamous armadillo job (yep, the same one that’s been keeping me on my toes — we’ll cover that saga another day) when my phone dings and rings.
“Uh… we got a snake stuck on a glue trap.”

Well, that’s never good news, but it’s my kinda call. I told them, “Hang tight, I’m on my way,” and rolled up to find a large, healthy female Plain-Bellied Water Snake looking very unhappy about her current life choices.

She was glued from her jaw down like she’d tried to cosplay as a sticker. The trap paper had gotten wet, so it was breaking apart a bit — but don’t let that fool you, she was still stuck like last year’s Christmas decorations on duct tape.

I told the folks what she was and what she liked to eat — frogs, toads, fish. And wouldn’t you know it… right after I said “toads,” she went, “Oh yeah? Watch this.” and spit up a whole toad like a bad magic trick.

She gave me one quick musking — the snake equivalent of crop dusting — then let me load her in the car without much fuss. Once home, the real work started: vegetable oil, Q-tips, and 30–45 minutes of sloooow, careful persistence.

She never once tried to bite — just kinda chilled, maybe figuring, “Eh, these folks are better than a glue trap.” But once that oil got working? Oh, she turned into a greased spaghetti noodle with trust issues.

💡 W.I.L.D. Snake Facts:

Not venomous! These gals get unfairly mistaken for cottonmouths, which is bad news for them.

Smooth operator: They’re strong swimmers and can dive to escape danger.

Belly style points: As the name suggests, their undersides are plain but bright — yellow, orange, or red.

Snack list: Frogs, toads, fish… and occasionally the patience of rescuers.

🚫 Pro Tip: Glue traps are bad news for wildlife. Birds, lizards, mammals, snakes, even pets — all fair game for that sticky mess. If you use them, keep them where non-target animals can’t reach, or better yet, ditch ’em for humane alternatives.

Another life saved, another critter given a second chance.

🐍 SNAKE STUCK ON A GLUE TRAP? NOT ON OUR WATCH. 🐍

Got a call — snake stuck to a glue trap.
Didn’t ask what kind. Didn’t care.
Just grabbed what I needed, dropped what I was doing, and hit the road.

When I got there?
It was a young Diamondback Water Snake (Nerodia rhombifer).
Clearly stressed, clearly exhausted — but still fighting.
That’s all I needed to see.

I brought him home, sat down with some vegetable oil and a Q-tip, and got to work. Took about 10 minutes of slow, steady teamwork, but we got him loose — every scale accounted for.

A few quick things about this slippery fella:

--He’s non-venomous, even though he acts tough. Hissing, flattening out, fake striking — it’s all a show.

--Eats fish and frogs. Great swimmer. Solid pest control.

--Just a baby right now, but these guys can grow over 4 feet long.

--Totally harmless unless you’re a fish, frog, or glue trap.

He’s hanging with me for a bit while I make sure there’s no lasting damage.
After that?
He’s heading to a nice local pond where he can live life like he’s supposed to — wild and free.

Let this be your reminder:
Glue traps kill more than just bugs and mice.
Birds. Lizards. Snakes. Even pets.
If you’ve got one out — pull it. There are better ways.
And if you find something caught up, call someone who gives a damn.
